PM Varadkar is the first foreign head of government to join a Canadian pride celebration, Trudeau said
Ireland's first openly-gay prime minister Leo Varadkar participated in Montreal's Gay Pride parade with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on August 20.
On Twitter, PM Varadkar, who is on a three-day visit to Canada, posted pictures and videos of the event which was attended by thousands of participants.
PM Varadkar, who took office in June, is the first foreign head of government to join a Canadian pride celebration, Justin Trudeau said.
The two heads of government earlier discussed a range of issues including the EU-Canada Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA), Brexit, abortion and human rights.
At a joint news conference, Mr Varadkar said he discussed the issue of abortion with PM Trudeau during their bilateral talks.
He said that he wanted to hold a referendum on the Eighth Amendment to the Irish Constitution early next year.
The 1983 law protects the right to life of a foetus, and outlaws abortion except in exceptional circumstances.
The Canadian PM said he shared PM Varadkar's perspective that reproductive rights were human rights.
Trudeau vowed "strength through diversity" in the face of recent attacks in Spain and Burkina Faso.
"These recent acts of terror are despicable," the Canadian leader said. "They seek to divide the global community, aiming to pit neighbour against neighbour.
