Hurricane Maria makes landfall in Puerto Rico
Hurricane Maria made landfall in Puerto Rico as a Category 4 storm as Puerto Ricans scrambled to stock food supplies as the hurricane continued its destructive path through the island of Dominica and other territories in the eastern Caribbean.
The storm hit Yabucoa in southeastern Puerto Rico around 6:15 am (1015 GMT), US weather forecasters said. The hurricane was moving northwest at 10 miles per hour, Reuters said.
Hurricane Maria was located about 40 km west of San Juan shortly before 11am ET (1500 GMT), the US National Hurricane Center said.
