The Grammys, taking place in New York after 15 years in Los Angeles, marked the first time that hip-hop has dominated the nominations after years of uneven recognition for the genre.
 

The music industry also seized on its annual televised gala to rally on behalf of the growing women`s movement against sexual harassment -- Lady Gaga, whispering from her piano in between ballads, declared, "Time`s up!"

And finally, Rihanna is on stage to perform! She is joined by Tiller and DJ Khaled.

Sting sings Englishman in New York, and perhaps means it literally given the circumstances and Grammys' home this year. Shaggy shows up to make the things cooler — and adds, "I'm a Jamaican in New York."

Rap and R&B are ruling the Grammys night this year. Kendrick Lamar and Bruno Mars are leading the way with three and two awards respectively. 

Rapper Kendrick Lamar and pop superstar Lady Gaga opened the Grammy Awards on Sunday with immediate if understated political touches. With a US flag in the backdrop, Lamar launched into a fierce rap at New York`s Madison Square Garden, on a stage full of dancers clad in camouflage.

Looks like Kendrick Lamar is clearly going to be the big winner of the night. The rap artist has already won three Grammys. Lamar won Best Rap Song, Best Rap Performance and Best Music Video, all for his 'HUMBLE'.
