'Got to figure something else,' Trump flirts with idea of third term in White House

United States presidential election winner Donald Trump on Wednesday (Nov 13) flirted with the idea of running for the White Housefor an unprecedented third term. News agency AFP cited Trump's address to House Republicans ahead of the beginning of his second term, in which the GOP leader allegedly said he was open to a Constitution-breaking third term.

"I suspect I won't be running again unless you say, 'He's good, we got to figure something else,'" Trump was quoted as saying by AFP.

In response, the crowd at a hotel in downtown Washington, DC burst into laughter.

"Well, thank you very much. This is a very nice gathering. Isn't it nice to win? It's nice to win. It's always nice to win. A lot of good friends in this room. So, you know we had, like, historic kind of numbers. Especially for the President, but we won't get into that," Trump told the gathering.

It must be noted that American presidents are barred from running for the top office for the third time bythe 22nd Amendment of the US Constitution.The amendment was ratified in 1951 and came after years of both parties calling for term limits for the presidency.

If Trump truly wants to run for the White House for the third time, he would have to repeal the 22nd Amendment, a herculean task for any administration.

Doing so would require overwhelming support from US Congress as well as state legislatures, something that remains out of his access.

According to Stanford University law professor Michael McConnell, there are no legal loopholes for Trump to run again.

“No. There are none. This will be his last run for president,” McConnell was quoted as saying by Vox.
