A passenger train crashed into a freight train
Close to 50 people were reported injured in a collision that happened near the German city of Duesseldorf, said the local police. No immediate reason for the crash was given. The mishap happened between a passenger train and a freight train at around 7:30 pm (local time) in the western state of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. State rail operator Deutsche Bahn reported North Rhine-Westphalia as Germany's most populous region.
The train had around 100 passengers on board, a National Express spokesman told Bild newspaper. The regional express train carrying passengers is run by the privately-owned British operator National Express, while the cargo train is operated by DB Cargo, it added.
"DB, the relevant authorities and the rescue services are working at the scene to provide urgent assistance to those affected and to clarify the situation," Deutsche Bahn said.
There have been reports of another train mishap that occurredin May this year where seven people were lightly injured when a regional train derailed in eastern Germany.
