German court considers banning diesel cars to tackle pollution

In a bid to control air pollution a German court is now considering banning diesel cars in its cities. Experts believe that the move, if materialises, may hamper the country's powerful auto industry.

Germany's Federal Administrative Court in Leipzig will announce its decision later today after hearing an appeal by two German states.

Some of the preliminary court cases were initiated by the group 'Environmental Action Germany'. The group has often blamed the government for putting automakers' interests before public health.

Germany, among other countries, has long been pressurised by the European Union to tackle increasing air pollution.

The country has recently been working on a series of measures to reduce harmful emissions such as promoting the use of electric vehicles and public transport, et cetera.

On the other hand, the ban is also believed to wreak havoc on industries and services that are heavily diesel reliant.
