Canada violated consular treaty over Huawei CFO's detention: Chinese FM spokesman

The Chinese Foreign Ministry said on Tuesday that Canada violated a consular treaty signed with China when it failed to immediately notify China that it had detained the Chief Financial Officer of the Chinese telecom giant Huawei.

Foreign Ministry Spokesman Lu Kang made the statement at a regular press briefing in Beijing.

"First, the China-Canada consular treaty specifies that Canada is obliged to immediately inform the Chinese embassy or consulates in Canada whenever there occurs such a case. Second, as I told you yesterday, China was not informed via Canada's government immediately, but learned of the case from other sources," said Lu.

Meng Wanzhou, the 46-year-old daughter of the Huawei founder Ren Zhengfei, has been held for over a week and faces extradition to the United States. Tuesday will be the third day of bail hearings at a court in Vancouver. The judge will decide whether or not to free Meng on bail. The United States accuses her of misleading multinational banks about Huawei's control of a company operating in Iran, allegedly violating US sanctions.
