The father of 27-year-old Indian national Gurdeep Singh, who was shot dead in Brooklyn over a pizza payment dispute, demands justice and government help to repatriate his son's body from the US.
The father of Indian national Gurdeep Singh, who was in New York for about a decade, was shot during a pizza delivery. The fatal shooting occurred on Friday night (Aug 21) near Stanley Avenue in the East New York neighbourhood. The Consulate General of India in New York confirmed the tragedy and expressed deep condolences and assured support to the bereaved family.
Pyare Lal, Gurdeep's father, urged the government to give justice to his child. Speaking to news agency ANI, “It had been 8-9 years since he went to New York. He used to deliver pizza there. He had gone to deliver pizza and had asked for its payment; the customer didn't pay up and shot him dead. I urge the government to provide justice for my child. We are a poor family. I also urge the Govt to take strict punishment against the culprits and have his body brought back from the US.”
Consular support and community reaction
Following the fatal shooting of 27-year-old Gurdeep Singh, representatives from the Consulate General of India in New York confirmed they are coordinating directly with local law enforcement and the victim’s family to assist with paperwork, emergency visas for relatives, and the expedited repatriation of his body back to Punjab. Members of the South Asian immigrant community and local Punjabi association leaders in New York expressed mounting concern over the incident, pointing out the growing safety risks faced by night-shift workers, delivery personnel, and ride-share drivers in the city.
Community advocates have called on local authorities to increase night-time police patrols and improve lighting in high-crime commercial zones across Brooklyn. Back in Jabowal village, Kapurthala, family members remembered Singh as a hardworking individual who moved to the United States seeking better economic opportunities to support his family back home. Local political leaders in Punjab have also appealed to the Ministry of External Affairs to ensure the family receives full diplomatic and logistics support during the process.
