Coronavirus death toll rises
Denmark PM Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said today that the "coronavirus infection is under control and the Danish strategy has succeeded in a first, difficult phase."
The country has 9,206 COVID-19 cases with 443 deaths so far with the country on lockdown since mid-March.
Demark is now slowly emerging from the lockdown restrictions allowingreopenings of schools for children up to age 11 and small businesses.
The country is bracing for the second phase of reopening from May 10, much like France and Greece which have also decided to reopen gradually.
Small businesses had, in fact, started opening with tattoo parlours, salons and dentists opening their outlets after a five-week lockdown as the country began lifting restrictions on April 15 by allowing preschools and primary schools to reopen after a month even as the World Health Organization(WHO) urged countries to ensure safeguards while easing restrictions.
The country had already banned gatherings of over 10 people and enforced social distancing norms amid the COVID-19 crisis.
"No one wants to keep Denmark closed for a day more than strictly necessary. But we must not move faster than what allows us to still keep the epidemic under control," Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen had said earlier as other European nations Italy, Spain and Austria began opening small businesses.
