Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday announced a complete lockdown in India in the wake of the rapid increase in number of confirmed cases of coronavirus. The coronavirus tally has crossed the 500-mark in India with over 30 fresh cases of Covid-19 getting reported from across the country on Tuesday.

The number of positive cases in India have crossed the 500 mark in India. As per data from the Health Ministry, the country currently has 519 cases.

Manipur woman tests corona positive, first in northeast India 

Manipur reported its first case of coronavirus as a 23-year-old woman who returned from the United Kingdom tested positive, making it the first case in the northeast, an official said on Tuesday.

According to the officials of Manipur' s Health and Family Welfare Department, the woman is now undergoing treatment at the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) in Imphal.

Government extends tax deadlines in view of lockdown due to coronavirus

Giving relief to citizens unable to meet deadlines due to the COVID-19 outbreak, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said the last date for filing of income tax returns for FY2018-19 has been extended to June 30.

A total of 15,189 deaths have been recorded, the majority in Europe with 9,197 fatalities. Italy is the hardest-hit country with 5,476 deaths, followed by China where the virus first emerged last year with 3,270, and Spain with 2,182. With a total of 1,395 new deaths reported in the past 24 hours out of 172,238 officially declared cases, Europe is now the continent where the virus is spreading the most rapidly.

A complete lockdown has been announced in 19 states and union territories. In six other states and union territories, only some areas have been kept under lockdown, says Lav Agarwal.

Lockdowns will be enabled in places both having deaths and positive cases, says Lav Agarwal of health ministry

"We have conducted 15,000-17,000 tests so far. We have the capacity to conduct 10,000 tests per day, it means we can conduct 50,000-70,000 per week", says Balram Bhargava of Indian Council of Medical Research during the press briefing.

During a lockdown, services including, hospitals and pharmacies, groceries/fruit/veg shops milk supply booths, cooking gas supplies, bank/ATMs, telecom services, limited public transport will remain active.

The number of coronavirus cases recorded in Belgium surged past 2,000 on Friday and the number of deaths attributed to the disease COVID-19 jumped by 16 to 37.

Italy on Wednesday reported 475 new deaths from the novel coronavirus, the highest one-day official toll of any nation since the first case was detected in China late last year.

Total deaths in Italy have reached 2,978, more than half of all the cases recorded outside China, while the number of infections reached 35,713.
The previous record high of 368 deaths was also recorded in Italy, on Sunday. 

Covid-19 cases reach 250 in Pakistan

With fresh cases being reported from Sindh, Islamabad and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa provinces, the number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Pakistan rose to 250 on Wednesday. The Sindh province is the worst-hit with 181 cases, followed by 26 in Punjab, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa reported 19 cases, Islamabad eight, Gilgit-Baltistan three, the Express Tribune reported.

Global death toll from coronavirus tops 8,000

The global death toll from the new coronavirus pandemic topped 8,000 on Wednesday, according to an AFP tally based on official figures.

As of 1200 GMT, 8,092 deaths have been recorded, most of them in Europe (3,422) and in Asia (3,384), where the outbreak originated. With 684 new deaths in the past 24 hours out of a total 78,766 cases, Europe is the continent where the pandemic is spreading the most rapidly. 

276 Indians, including 255 in Iran, infected with coronavirus abroad: MEA

In a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha, Minister of State for External Affairs V Muraleedharan said the total number of Indians infected by coronavirus is 276 -- 255 in Iran, 12 in UAE, five in Italy, and one each in Hong Kong, Kuwait, Rwanda and Sri Lanka.

A fourth batch of 53 Indians returned to India from Iran on Monday, taking the total number of people evacuated from the coronavirus-hit country to 389.

Iran is one of the worst-affected countries by the coronavirus outbreak and the government has been working to bring back Indians stranded there. Over 700 people have died from the disease in Iran and nearly 14,000 cases detected.

India has been taking strict precautionary measures to keep the spread of COVID-19 in the country in check, in the wake of the WHO declaring it as a pandemic.

Qatar bans arrivals from 14 countries over coronavirus fears

Qatar has temporarily barred travellers from 14 countries from March 9 as a precaution against the rapidly spreading coronavirus, the government announced on Sunday.

The ban covers China, Egypt, India, Iran, Iraq, Lebanon, Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan, Philippines, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Syria and Thailand.

Amazon confirms first coronavirus case among US employees

Online retailer Amazon.com Inc said on Tuesday an employee in the United States tested positive for the coronavirus.

Coronavirus scare hits Noida school: Premises closed, all exams cancelled
