Spain's constitutional court has annulled the Catalan parliament's unilateral declaration of independence last month.
"The declaration of independence of October 27 has been declared unconstitutional and void," a court spokeswoman said in a statement.
Last week, the Spanish government had seized control of Catalonia, sacking its police chief after the Catalan regional parliament's independence declaration.
The Spanish government's move came even as thousands celebrated in Barcelona and other Catalan cities a fortnight ago.
