A device exploded in the US embassy compound in Ukraine's capital Kiev in the early hours of Thursday, Reuters reported.

Police said there were no injuries.

An attacker threw the device over the embassy's fence just after midnight, police said.

"The explosion on the territory of the US embassy in Kiev is treated as an act of terrorism," OksanaBlischik, a spokesperson for Kiev’s police said.

The US embassy was not immediately contactable for comment but a diplomat, speaking on condition of anonymity, told AFP: "The embassy will continue to function normally."
