Argentine navy confirms sound detection in area of missing submarine

Argentine Navy confirmed on Thursday that there was a "violent and non-nuclear event" consistent with an explosion occurred around the area where the ARA San Juan was lost along with 44 members.

According to Enrique Balbi, a spokesman for the Argentine Navy (ARA), the US and nuclear testing organization in Austria confirmed the incident.

"Specifically, we received information about an abnormal, unusual, short, violent and non-nuclear event, possibly an explosion," said Balbi.

Balbi added that their reason for the explosion remains unknown and is still under observation by the officials

Moreover, no evidence suggests that it was caused by an external attack.

Three Argentine vessels on Wednesday followed by six more on Thursday have started searching the explosion-hit area. The spokesperson confirms that the search will continue till the submarine and its crew member are found

"We will continue our search and rescue operation until we can gather more evidence on where the ARA San Juan and its 44 crew members are at. We will continue this work before drawing any final conclusion with full certainty," said Balbi.

Reports also said that the crew would have run out of oxygen as it was supposed to last for just seven days, leaving international rescue mission to conduct search operations at a faster pace in order to spot any signals.
