Story highlights

Trump addressed Republicans at the Kennedy Center in Washington, days after US forces on Saturday (Jan 3) captured the Venezuelan leader during an operation described as part of America’s war against drug cartels and traffickers.

US President Donald Trump on Tuesday (Jan 5) accused Nicolas Maduro of imitating his dance as he celebrated the capture of the Venezuelan leader. He added that First Lady Melania “hates” his dance and calls it “unpresidential”. Trump was speaking in a speech to Republicans at the Kennedy Centre in Washington after the US forces on Saturday (Jan 3) seized the Venezuelan leader in what it described as its war against drug cartels and drug lords. In an operation titled Operation Absolute Resolve, the American forces entered Venezuela, bombed Caracas and captured Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, from their presidential palace.

“He gets up there and he tries to imitate my dance a little bit,” Trump said. “But he’s a violent guy, and he’s killed millions of people. He’s tortured. They have a torture chamber in the middle of Caracas that they’re closing up.”

While Trump is known for dancing to the “Y.M.C.A.” at his rallies, Maduro has frequently seen dancing to a techno mix of his mantra “No War, Yes Peace”, which he has frequently used in response to the US president’s threats.

Trump stated, “She hates it when I dance,” adding, “Could you imagine FDR dancing?”

During his speech, Trump also hailed the “brilliant” operation by US special forces during which Maduro and his wife were captured, and Caracas was bombed.

Trump also mentioned the fifth anniversary of the US Capitol attack by his supporters after what he calls “rigged” elections that led to his loss against Joe Biden in 2020. Trump was impeached for the second time over the riot. He added that if they did not win this year’s midterm elections, the same thing could happen.

“You got to win the midterms, because if we don’t win... I mean, they’ll find a reason to impeach me,” he said, referring to his Democrat opponents

“I wish you could explain to me what the hell’s going on with the mind of the public. Because we have the right policy,” Trump said.
