Hundreds of yoga enthusiasts gathered on the runway of Bangkok's main airport on Saturday (April 27), reaching toward the reddening sky as they laid out their mats.

Despite the early morning flights rumbling overhead, participants engaged in their yoga practice, including the downward dog pose. This unique event took place on the airport's third runway, which is still under construction.

Alongside the workout, participants were provided with beverages such as coconut, iced tea, and water to enhance their routine. Around 500 yoga practitioners and camera-ready influencers began arriving at 5:00 am, navigating in the darkness to find their designated spots on the runway.

As the sun came up, yoga instructors led the group through two sessions with high spirits, despite the pollution, industrial surroundings, and occasional airplane noise.

"Today is going to be very special," an instructor blared, before urging participants to "put your coconut in the air!"

"Feel like a beautiful bird," she said, as a plane rumbled along the concrete and lifted into the air behind the participants.

Although many attendees were influencers, possibly more concerned with capturing the perfect shot than executing the perfect lunge, most appeared to be there for a good time.

"This was something fun, this was a nice event," said lawyer Rugeradh Tungsupakul, attending with a friend.

"Right now, because of our jobs, we are too busy to go to a yoga studio," she told AFP.

Despite Rugeradh's concerns about pollution, a common problem in the smoggy city of Bangkok, which often ranks among the world's most polluted cities, she mentioned that they had checked the air quality before heading to the event.

While a few men were present in the crowd, the majority of participants in the workout were women. Most of them were dressed in the typical yoga attire of black leggings and cropped white t-shirts, with the addition of "BREW" emblazoned on the shirts, representing Brew Yoga, the organisers of the event.

'Feel like a beautiful bird': Mass yoga session takes place on Bangkok airport tarmac

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lead a yoga session at UN headquarters for the first time in New York.

June 21 marks the International Day of Yoga, during which Modi will be landing in the city as part of his four-day visit to the United States.

“On the occasion of the 9th International Day of Yoga, the Permanent Representative of India to the United Nations cordially invites you to join a Yoga session led by H. E. Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi,” an advisory for the event said, according to PTI news agency.

It was PM Modi who first proposed from the UN General Assembly podium to mark International Yoga Day as an annual commemoration.

<h2>First time</h2>

This will be the first time that the Indian leader will lead the yoga session at the UN Headquarters in a historic commemoration of the day.

The one-hour session from&nbsp;8 am&nbsp;will begin at the expansive North Lawn in the UN Headquarters, where a bust of Mahatma Gandhi—a gift from India to the UN—was installed in December last year during the country's presidency of the UN Security Council.

<h2>VIP guests expected</h2>

The historic yoga session is expected to be attended by top UN officials, ambassadors, envoys, delegates from member states as well as prominent members of the global and diaspora community.

“I am looking forward to participating in the 9th International Day of Yoga celebrations @UN with Prime Minister @NarendraModi at the UNHQ North Lawn next week,” President of the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly Csaba Korosi said in a tweet Thursday.

The tweet accompanies a photograph of Korosi with PM Modi.

Prime Minister Modi is visiting the US from June 21 to June 24 at the invitation of US President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden.
