These findings have been published in a journal Proceedings B. Using DNA to track the legacy of a nuclear event, the&nbsp;study attempts to discover what happens to wild animals in a radiation-contaminated area, that was invaded by livestock as humans abandon it.

Examination of the DNA of this wild boar revealed what was termed as a "biological invasion" present in the boar's genes and a “dilution” over time in domestic pig genes.

Donovan Anderson says that "I think the pigs were not able to survive in the wild, but the boar thrived in the abandoned towns - because they're so robust,".

As he puts it, while the evacuation of the area was the origin of this cross-breeding, the hybrid pigs then went on to breed with the wild boars.

According to professor Shingo Kaneko from Fukushima University's Institute of Environmental Radioactivity, "Those invasive genes are disappearing, and the natural situation is coming back."

Since 2018, humans have started to move back into this previously abandoned area.

Anderson said, "Humans are really the only predators for these wild boars,"

"So as people come back, it'll be really interesting to see what the boar do."

But the world-famous cave in northern Chiang Rai province was reopened Friday, drawing some 2,000 tourists in a single day, a local conservation official told AFP.&nbsp;

"We have allowed visitors to see the mouth of the cave," said Kamolchai Kotcha, director of the local conservation office that overseas the cave.

Guests are not allowed beyond the entrance for now, where they can peer into the cave opening, but officials said they were considering allowing people deeper inside after surveying the safety of the route.&nbsp;

Some of the rescue equipment left behind -- including telephone wires, hoses and zip lines -- could be exhibited inside the cave for visitors to view in the future, Kotcha said.&nbsp;

Photos from the opening on Friday showed tourists at the site's entry, where last year the boys' bikes and backpacks were found -- alerting local police they were likely inside.&nbsp;

The Wild Boars went into Tham Luang in June 2018 for a routine hike after football practice but became trapped after heavy rains blocked the only route out.

Hundreds of people descended on the remote site to help save the boys, who were found -- emaciated but alive -- on a muddy perch deep inside the cave after nine excruciating days of searching.&nbsp;

The boys were sedated and fitted out in full-face breathing masks before being pulled to safety through a hazardous underwater labyrinth.

Several books deals about the drama have been inked, and the first film about the rescue premiered this month at the Busan International Film Festival in South Korea.&nbsp;

It was a year of extremes - from the provocative to the persuasive, from the sublime to the ridiculous.

The year redeemed itself when 12 boys of a junior football team in Thailand were rescued alive from the cave after 17 harrowing days.

The 12 members of the team, aged 11 to 17, and their 25-year-old assistant coach entered Tham Luang Nang Non cave in Chiang Rai province of Thailand on June 23. The group had planned to explore the cavern complex for about an hour after football practice.

Shortly afterwards, heavy rains partially flooded the cave, trapping the group inside. Their life hanged in the balance as divers from multiple countries came together to draw up an elaborate rescue plan.

Led by 13 "world class" divers, the boys were accompanied by two adults each, with others stationed in junctions along the way.

They wore face masks and were tied to buddy divers who carried their oxygen tanks, guiding them through more than two kilometres of narrow, dark corridors using torches and guide ropes.

Each round trip took around 10 hours on average.

The rescue operation was one of the most difficult ones in recent history. The danger was highlighted by the death of a former Navy SEAL as he helped bring oxygen tanks along the route.

Experts had worried that the harrowing journey could make the boys panic, triggering an underwater accident.

Those concerns led rescuers to approve a mild sedative that calmed the youngsters, according to Thailand's junta chief Prayut Chan-O-Cha.

Prayut said that a "minor tranquiliser" had been used to help keep the kids calm on the terrifying swim to freedom, much of it in water with very low or no visibility.

But, eventually, the rescuers succeeded in bringing all the boys out alive. The boys and their coach lost an average of two kilograms during their ordeal but were generally in good condition after the rescue.
