A high base effect and moderation in global commodity prices has resulted in Wholesale Price Index (WPI) falling to a near three-year low of&nbsp;(-) 0.92 per cent in April. This is the first instance in nearly three years&nbsp;(July 2020) that the inflation rate based on WPI has slipped into negative territory, according to data released by the&nbsp;Ministry of Commerce and Industry on Monday.

"Decline in the rate of inflation in April 2023 is primarily contributed by fall in prices of basic metals, food products, mineral oils, textiles, non-food articles, chemical &amp; chemical products, rubber &amp; plastic products and paper &amp; paper products," the government noted.&nbsp;

According to experts, the trend is expected to continue as the year progresses. The full-year WPI inflation is estimated to remain in the range of one to two per cent.&nbsp;

"High base effect and falling commodity prices will lend downward pressure on WPI inflation this year," Madan Sabnavis, an economist at Bank of Baroda was quoted as saying by Reuters. He added that low commodity prices will also bring down the prices of manufactured goods.&nbsp;

A lower WPI inflation rate could help in pulling retail inflation down with its lagged impact making a significant dent on the core CPI inflation.&nbsp;

The retail inflation in the country eased to 4.7 per cent in April which was an 18-month low, as against 5.7 per cent recorded in the month of March.&nbsp;

It was in July 2020 that WPI last recorded deflation at&nbsp;t (-) 0.25 per cent while the previous low was recorded in June 2020 at&nbsp;&nbsp;(-) 1.81 per cent.&nbsp;

The annual rate of inflation based on wholesale price index stood at 3.07 per cent in April compared to 3.18 per cent in March, the government said on Tuesday. It was 3.62 per cent in April last year, according to a statement released by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.

The official wholesale price index for all commodities (base: 2011-12=100) for April 2019 rose by 0.8 per cent to 120.9.

Build up inflation rate in the financial year so far was 0.75 per cent compared to a build-up rate of 0.86 per cent in the corresponding period of the previous year.

The index for primary articles group (with weightage of 22.6 per cent) rose by 3.3 per cent to 139.2 from 134.7 for March.

Under this, the index for food articles group rose by 3.4 per cent due to higher price of tea by 15 per cent, fruits and vegetables by 14 per cent, peas and chawali by 6 per cent, maize by 5 per cent, poultry chicken by 4 per cent, arhar, bajra and pork by 3 per cent each), gram, condiments and spices by 2 per cent each, masur, urad, mutton and rajma by 1 per cent each.

However, prices of egg declined by 6 per cent, betel leaves by 4 per cent, barley and wheat by 3 per cent each), beef and buffalo meat by 1 per cent each.

The index for non-food articles'&nbsp;group rose by 2.6 per cent to 126.7 from 123.5 during March.

The index for electricity group declined by 3.1 per cent to 107.3 from 110.7 for March due to lower price of electricity by 3 per cent.

WPI inflation slips to 3.07% in April from 3.18% in March

Wholesale price-based inflation rose for the <a href="WPI inflation spikes to 3.18 pc in March on costlier food, fuel">second consecutive month to 3.18 per cent</a> in March on costlier food and fuel, government data released Monday showed.

The Reserve Bank, which mainly factors in retail inflation for monetary policy decision, had earlier this month cut interest rates by 0.25 per cent.

Retail inflation accelerated to 2.86 per cent in March from 2.57 per cent a month ago, data released last week showed.

For April-September period, the RBI has projected retail inflation at 2.9-3 per cent, mainly due to lower food and fuel prices as well as expectation of a normal monsoon.&nbsp;

Potato inflation was at a peak of 81.93 per cent, against 67.94 per cent in April.

Price rise in fruits was in double digits at 15.40 per cent, while pulses saw a deflation of 21.13 per cent.

The WPI inflation for March was revised upwards to 2.74 per cent from the provisional estimate of 2.47 per cent.

May inflation at 4.43 per cent was a 14-month peak. The previous high was in March 2017, when the WPI inflation stood at 5.11 per cent.

In its second monetary policy review for the fiscal, the Reserve Bank earlier this month hiked interest rate by 0.25 per cent-- the first hike in more than four years -- due to growing concerns about inflation stoked by rising global crude oil prices as well as domestic price increases.

The price of Indian basket of crude surged from USD 66 a barrel in April to around USD 74 currently.

WPI inflation rises to 14-month high of 4.43% in May on costlier fuel, veggies

Inflation based on wholesale prices eased to 3.58 per cent in December 2017 as prices of food articles declined even as fuel cost witnessed a surge.&nbsp;

Calculated on the basis of Wholesale Price Index (WPI), the inflation was 3.93 per cent in November 2017 and 2.10 per cent in December 2016.&nbsp;

As per government data released today, inflation on food articles slowed to 4.72 per cent in December, from 6.06 per cent in November 2017.&nbsp;

Vegetables too witnessed some softening with annual inflation at 56.46 per cent in December as against 59.80 per cent in the previous month. Kitchen staple onion witnessed a whopping 197.05 per cent price rise in December.&nbsp;

Inflation in protein-rich eggs, meat and fish cooled to 1.67 per cent in December, while that in fruits spiked to 11.99 per cent.&nbsp;

In the fuel and power segment, wholesale inflation rose to 9.16 per cent in December, while it was 2.61 per cent for manufactured items.&nbsp;

Data released last week showed that retail inflation breached the RBI&#39;s comfort level to touch 5.21 per cent in December on rise in prices of food items, especially vegetables.&nbsp;

The Reserve Bank takes into account retail inflation while deciding on key policy rates.&nbsp;

WPI inflation eases to 3.58% in December as veggies price decline

Inflation at the wholesale level rose to a 6-month high of 3.59 percent in October as the prices of food articles, led by onions and vegetables, rose sharply.

Inflation, based on the Wholesale Price Index (WPI), was 2.60 percent in September. In October last year, it was 1.27 percent.

Last month&#39;s inflation was the highest since April when it was 3.85 percent.

The government data released today showed that inflation in food articles more than doubled to 4.30 percent in October.

For vegetables, it soared to 36.61 percent last month as against 15.48 percent in September.

In case of onions, inflation skyrocketed to 127.04 percent, while for the eggs, meat and fish segment the rate of price rise was 5.76 percent.

Inflation in manufactured products saw a slight dip to 2.62 percent, as against 2.72 percent in September.

In the fuel and power segment, inflation rose to 10.52 percent, as against 9.01 percent in September. Fuel inflation has remained high for the past three months as petrol and diesel prices continued to rule high tracking global crude oil rates.

Power tariffs shot through the roof on lower domestic production.

Pulses continued to witness deflation at 31.05 percent. Likewise, in potato deflation was at 44.29 percent and wheat at 1.99 percent.

The final print of August WPI inflation remained unchanged at 3.24 percent.

As per the Consumer Price Index (CPI) data released yesterday, retail inflation for October rose to a 7-month high of 3.58 percent on costlier food items, especially vegetables.

Besides, industrial production for September expanded at 3.8 percent, on poor showing by the manufacturing sector coupled with a decline in consumer durables output.

Last month, the Reserve Bank kept benchmark interest rate unchanged on fears of rising inflation while lowering growth forecast to 6.7 percent for the current fiscal.

RBI also raised its inflation forecast to the 4.2-4.6 percent range for the rest of the current fiscal as against 4-4.5 percent previously.&nbsp;

WPI inflation at 6-month high of 3.59%

The Wholesale Price Index (WPI) for all commodities for the month of July 2017 registered a 1.1 percent surge from June, and was recorded at 113.9 (provisional) from 112.7 (provisional) for the previous month.

The numbers registered the annual rate of inflation, based on monthly WPI, stood at 1.88 percent (provisional) for the month of July, 2017, as compared to 0.90 percent (provisional) for the previous month and 0.63 percent during the corresponding month of the previous year.

Build up inflation rate in the financial year so far was 0.62 percent, compared to a build up rate of 3.81 percent in the corresponding period of the previous year

The index for the Food Articles group rose by 6.2 percent to 147.6 (provisional) from 139.0 (provisional) for the previous month, owing to higher price of fruits and vegetables (29 percent), peas (six percent), ragi (four percent) and condiments and spices, barley, poultry chicken and paddy at one percent each.

However, the price of betel leaves, tea, arhar, fish and jowar declined by 21 percent, five percent, four percent and one percent respectively.

In the Non-Food Articles group, the index rose by 0.6 percent, at 118.5 (provisional) from 117.8 (provisional) for the previous month, due to higher price of raw rubber (eight percent), safflower (four percent) and castor seed (one percent).

However, the price of groundnut seed, raw silk and jute and sesamum declined by four percent, three percent and one percent respectively.

The index for Crude Petroleum and Natural Gas&nbsp;group declined by 7.8 percent to 64.0 (provisional) from 69.4 (provisional) for the previous month due to an 11 percent decline in the price of crude petroleum.

The index for Manufacture of Tobacco Products&nbsp;group declined by 0.5 percent to 143.6 (provisional) from 144.3 (provisional) for the previous month due to lower price of other tobacco products by three percent. However, the price of cigarette surged by two percent.

The index for Manufacture of Textiles&nbsp;group declined by 0.3 percent to 113.4 (provisional) from 113.7 (provisional) for the previous month due to lower price of viscose yarn, manufacture of cordage, rope, twine and netting and woollen yarn, cotton yarn and manufacture of other textiles. However, the price of manufacture of knitted and crocheted fabrics was up by two percent.

The index for Manufacture of Wearing Apparel&nbsp;group rose by 2.1 percent to 136.0 (provisional) from 133.2 (provisional) for the previous month due to higher price of manufacture of wearing apparel.

On the contrary, the index for Manufacture of Leather and Related Products? group declined by 0.3 percent to 119.5 (provisional) from 119.9 (provisional) for the previous month due to lower price of canvas shoes, chrome tanned leather, harness, saddles and other related items and gloves of leather.

However, the price of belt and other articles of leather saw a surge by three percent.

However, the price of betel leaves, tea, arhar, fish and jowar declined by 21 percent, five percent, four percent and one percent respectively. In the Non-Food Articles group, the index rose by 0.6 percent, at 118.5 (provisional) from 117.8 (provisional) for the previous month, due to higher price of raw rubber (eight percent), safflower (four percent) and castor seed (one percent). However, the price of groundnut seed, raw silk and jute and sesamum declined by four percent, three percent and one percent respectively. The index for Crude Petroleum and Natural Gas group declined by 7.8 percent to 64.0 (provisional) from 69.4 (provisional) for the previous month due to an 11 percent decline in the price of crude petroleum. The index for Manufacture of Tobacco Products group declined by 0.5 percent to 143.6 (provisional) from 144.3 (provisional) for the previous month due to lower price of other tobacco products by three percent. However, the price of cigarette surged by two percent. The index for Manufacture of Textiles group declined by 0.3 percent to 113.4 (provisional) from 113.7 (provisional) for the previous month due to lower price of viscose yarn, manufacture of cordage, rope, twine and netting and woollen yarn, cotton yarn and manufacture of other textiles. However, the price of manufacture of knitted and crocheted fabrics was up by two percent. The index for Manufacture of Wearing Apparel group rose by 2.1 percent to 136.0 (provisional) from 133.2 (provisional) for the previous month due to higher price of manufacture of wearing apparel. On the contrary, the index for Manufacture of Leather and Related Products? group declined by 0.3 percent to 119.5 (provisional) from 119.9 (provisional) for the previous month due to lower price of canvas shoes, chrome tanned leather, harness, saddles and other related items and gloves of leather. However, the price of belt and other articles of leather saw a surge by three percent.
