Ravi Shastri on Monday applied formally for the job of head coach of the Indian cricket team.&nbsp;

Media reports said he was a favourite for the job, and that captain Virat Kohli keen on having him as coach.&nbsp;

Another notable application on Monday was that of former West Indies opener Phil Simmons.

&quot;Yes, Ravi has applied and so has Phil Simmons,&quot; PTI reported a BCCI official as saying.

The others who have thrown their hat into the ring are Virender Sehwag, Tom Moody, Venkatesh Prasad, Richard Pybus, Dodda Ganesh and Lalchand Rajput.

The deadline for applying is July 9.&nbsp;

Interviews of the applicants will be conducted the following day by the Cricket Advisory Committee&nbsp;comprising Sourav Ganguly, VVS Laxman, and Sachin Tendulkar.

Media reports It was Tendulkar who had asked Shastri to apply for the job.&nbsp;

Just as interestingly, it is thought Ganguly had backed ex-coach Anil Kumble for the job over Shastri last year.&nbsp;

Kumble had finally had to go because of differences with captain Virat Kohli.&nbsp;
