All passenger flights from Germany’s Berlin Brandenburg airport which are scheduled to take off and land, on Wednesday (January 25) have either been cancelled or rescheduled due to a labour strike over a wage dispute. At least 300 flights and as many as 35,000 passengers scheduled to pass through the airport have been affected, as per media reports. It is also the first time since 2018 that strikes have led to so many flight cancellations.&nbsp;

“We hope that the pressure is enough,”&nbsp;said Enrico Ruemker, a representative of the trade union Verdi, that organised the strike. He added, “When you see how high the inflation rate is and consider that the colleagues from this area have not had a salary increase for many, many years, this offer is of course a slap in the face for the colleagues,”&nbsp;reported Reuters.&nbsp;

The walkout began at 3:30 am (local time) when several workers gathered in front of the main terminal building of the airport for a strike which was set to last throughout the day. Meanwhile, the airlines have rescheduled some flights for Thursday and others have been diverted to the country’s other airports in Dresden and Leipzig.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The trade union called on airport staff in ground services, aviation security and the airport company for a one-day stoppage over a wage dispute across three parallels over what they reportedly&nbsp;described&nbsp;as insufficient progress in the talks. As many as 1,500 workers are expected to participate in the strikes, the union had previously said, as per DW.&nbsp;

According to Ruemker, the airport company had proposed a two-year term under which salaries would increase by three per cent on June 1 and by an additional two per cent on May 1, 2024. Meanwhile, the trade union has demanded a 12-month collective bargaining contract under which airport employees and the ground handling services would receive a monthly hike of $540 in their salaries. On the other hand, employers have proposed a much longer contract.&nbsp;

Strikes are set to continue in the United Kingdom by workers and nurses demanding higher wage after meeting between trade unions and ministers failed on Monday which were aimed at ending stoppages across sectors from transport to healthcare. &nbsp;

On Wednesday, as planned around 10,000 ambulance workers will walk out, said the GMB union in a statement after meeting with Health Minister Steve Barclay did not result in a breakthrough.

"There was some engagement on pay - but not a concrete offer that could help resolve this dispute and make significant progress," said GMB national secretary Rachel Harrison.&nbsp;

In the view of pay increase failing to match with double-digit inflation, ambulance staff, rail workers and nurses have staged walkouts, and teachers are voting over the action.

The RCN, which represents the nurses, termed the talks with Barclay "bitterly disappointing". It added that there was a long way to go if ministers wished to stop strikes of nurses scheduled on January 18 and 19.&nbsp;

Unions Unite and Unison, which represent the health workers, slammed the approach of the government. Unite trade union national lead officer Onay Kasab, after holding a meeting with health minister Steve Barclay, said that the government clearly expressed its wish to discuss productivity savings in exchange for further pay awards.

"We're talking about people who are working well beyond their contracted hours anyway, just to get the job done. Today is an insult to our members,” he said.&nbsp;

The unions have announced that the strikes will be called off only if offers are made to resolve pay disputes of this year, as the government plans to focus on the increase in wages in the next financial year.

Meanwhile, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on Monday said the talks being held between trade unions and ministers were a "positive development".

''I'm really pleased that union leaders accepted ministers' invitations to come in today to have discussions across the board, and that's a really positive development. And on pay, we've always said that the government is happy to talk about pay demands and pay issues that are anchored in what's reasonable, what's responsible, what's affordable for the country. But the most important thing is those talks are happening and let's try and sit down and find a way through,” said Sunak.

Last week, the union, The NewsGuild of New York, had announced that employees of NYT would walk out for 24 hours starting at 12.01 am (local time) on Thursday unless the two sides reach a deal. Despite discussions on Tuesday and Wednesday, they could not agree to a deal.

The employees said that they were fed up with the bargaining that has taken place since their last contract expired in March 2021.

The union took to Twitter on Wednesday to announce that the walkout was happening.

"We were ready to work for as long as it took to reach a fair deal, but management walked away from the table with five hours to go," it said.

"We know what we're worth," the union added.

NYT spokesperson Rhoades Ha told The Associated Press news agency that the company has "solid plans in place" to continue producing content, including relying on international reporters and other journalists who are not union members.

Deputy Managing Editor Cliff Levy, in a note to the guild on Tuesday night, called the planned strike "puzzling" and "an unsettling moment in negotiations over a new contract."

He said it would be the first strike by the bargaining unit since 1981 and "comes despite intensifying efforts by the company to make progress."

However, in a letter signed by more than 1,000 employees, the union said that the management has been "dragging its feet" bargaining for nearly two years and "time is running out to reach a fair contract" by the end of the year.
