Students living in the Osmania University Post Graduate Girls Hostel staged a protest inside the campus on Saturday (Jan 27) after an incident of security lapse was reported. 
 
The students, who were protesting, said they had caught hold of one of the intruders who had entered their hostel premises. However, the police are yet to confirm the number of intruders who entered the hostel. 
 
The students raised the slogan “We want justice" while sitting in front of their hostel as the police personnel persuaded them to leave the spot.

Speaking to news agency ANI, one of the student protesters said that various security concerns have been raised by the hostel occupants since they came back from the holidays. 
 
"After we came back from the Sankranti Holidays, we were hearing strange sounds in different rooms. But we thought it might be our mistake," said a student.

The security issues were escalated after one hostel inmate&nbsp;reportedly witnessed someone's hands protruding from the washroom's ventilator both on the ground floor and the first floor. 
 
The student protester, remembering the harrowing ordeal, said, "Yesterday, the incident happened on two of the floors, the ground floor as well as the first floor at the same time. We have ventilators in our washrooms. The washrooms have little space. She (one of the students) locked herself in the washroom. But she saw hands coming out of the ventilator. She panicked and ran."

Immediately, the students sought help from their seniors to confront the intruders. 
 
"We approached our seniors. We were searching for them. We saw three of them, only one was caught by us. We are demanding the rest who were there to be nabbed," said the protester. 
 
Appealing the Vice-Chancellor (VC) to come to address their issues, the protester said, "We have been sitting here since 12:30..We want the VC to come and address our problem and we want a solution for all our issues. Security is important. We want proper security where we are staying."

Nazar Dianov, a 4-year-old Russian boy is now able to walk and play after having undergone a successful bilateral lung transplant at a hospital in the Southern Indian city of Chennai. Owing to a birth defect (of unknown cause) called ‘fibrosing alveolitis’, he had to be put on a ventilator, barely two months after he was born in his home country. 
 
Following this, the six-month-old baby had also undergone a tracheostomy(inserting a tube into the windpipe to aid breathing via oxygen supply and ventilator support) and later brought to Chennai for further treatment.&nbsp;

According to Doctors at MGM Healthcare, the young patient was on a ventilator for three years in Chennai, until a suitable lung donor (cadaver) was found. It was a 2-year old brain dead donor from Surat, in the Western Indian State of Gujarat that offered the Russian a new lease of life. The major challenge and delay, in this case, is associated with the requirement of a small lung that would be suitable for the baby patient. Being on a ventilator for such a long period also makes the patient’s condition even more complicated, as patients on ventilators can develop infections in under a week.&nbsp;

It was in mid-December 2020, amid the COVID-19 pandemic, that a team of 20-doctors successfully performed the transplant procedure under the leadership of Dr K.R. Balakrishnan, Director Heart and Lung Transplant Program. Despite the patient having being under ventilator support for three years, Doctors said, that the new pair of lungs are responding well in the patient. According to the hospital, the boy is presently off the ventilator and on minimal oxygen support and they how he will be able to live a normal life in the coming times.&nbsp;

Responding to WION’s queries about what caused this condition in the infant, Doctors said that it was a rare, mutated birth defect. “In Russia, they don’t have pediatric organ donation by Law, hence their doctors referred the family to us in India. However, there is very little awareness about pediatric lung transplants, even in India, as it is not done very commonly. We have hardly seen any such cases come to us” they added when asked about such cases in India and the choice of an Indian hospital.&nbsp;

Highlighting the importance of organ donation in saving lives, the Doctors urged the masses to understand and acknowledge that “we don’t need our organs after we are gone”. They estimated that 90% of the liver and kidney transplants are from live donors, whereas heart and lungs are very rare as they are cadaver dependent, thus causing a long, sometimes endless wait.

As the country unlocks, UK’s medical experts are raising concerns about the alarming increase in the number of people on ventilators in the UK.

The number of <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/coronavirus">Covid patients</a> on ventilators has increased by 41 per cent in the last week, which shows a deadly rise of the effect the virus is having on locals of the UK, deputy chief executive of NHS Providers, Saffron Cordery said.

"Trusts on the frontline are really coming under huge pressure ... they have plans in place to tackle the backlog, but with more Covid cases and demand for emergency care going up, that’s really challenging," Cordery said in a local programme.

"I think we need to look at this sudden rise in the demand for emergency care as well, so you know we are seeing record levels of demand for that kind of care," she added.

While Cordery warned people against the deadly effect of the virus, other medical experts are also urging people to get vaccinated against coronavirus.

"It’s clear now that having two doses of either AstraZeneca, Moderna or Pfizer gives high level of protection against severe disease. People still get infected but at a much lower level, they probably get 80-90 per cent protection against infection alone, and even those people who do get infected after two doses are almost certainly probably 50 per cent less infectious, so the combined effect of that is quite dramatic at reducing risk," Ferguson said.

Afghanistan has recorded around 35,500 COVID-19 cases and 1,181 deaths, though experts warn the true count is probably far higher due to low testing rates.
