In a response to Russia cutting down American diplomatic presence in Moscow, the United States has asked Russia to close its consulate in San Francisco.

It has also ordered the closure of buildings that houses Russia&#39;s trade missions.

The move signals worsening of ties between the two countries which have reached a new low in the post-Cold War era.&nbsp;

Russia had ordered the cutting down of US diplomatic staff by half in retaliation to US Congress approving a set of <a href="http://www.wionews.com/world/trump-signs-russia-sanctions-bill-into-law-18515" target="_blank">new sanctions against Moscow</a>.

The sanctions were imposed for <a href="http://www.wionews.com/world/no-doubt-russia-meddled-in-us-election-nikki-haley-14100" target="_blank">Russia&#39;s interference in the US Presidential elections</a> and its annexation of Crimea in 2014.

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, in a phone call to his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov, informed him of the move to close the consulate, Reuters quoted a senior Trump administration official as saying.

&quot;Moscow will closely study the new measures announced by the Americans, after which our reaction will be conveyed,&quot; said the &nbsp;the Russian foreign ministry.

In December, the Obama administration had expelled 35 Russian diplomats for Russia&#39;s meddling in the 2016 US Prseidential electioons.&nbsp;
