Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay called on Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar at the Lok Bhavan in Chennai on Wednesday and staked claim to form the next government in Tamil Nadu, putting all speculations to rest and ending the uncertainty. The actor-turned-politician met the governor after the Congress party broke its alliance with the DMK and announced its support for him. Meanwhile, several leaders in the AIADMK are also in favour of supporting Vijay. However, sources said that the governor is not yet convinced about TVK’s claim, since the party is still short of the official figure to prove majority support. The governor is reported to have told Vijay to come with the backing of the needed 118 MLAs, setting off a fresh round of political scrambling. TVK, which emerged as the single-largest party after the assembly election, fell short of 10 seats to hit the majority mark of 118. Even after support of Congress, which has five seats, the TVK is still short of the magical number. Moreover, since Vijay won two seats, he will have to leave one. The VCK, which won two seats, is also holding discussions on its decision and strategy. Also Read: ‘Verify, think before sharing,’ says Giorgia Meloni after her AI-made image in lingerie goes viral The DMK bagged 59 seats, the AIADMK 47, the PMK 4, the IUML 2, the CPI 2, the CPI(M) 2, and the BJP, DMDK, and AMMK a seat each. The Congress made the formal announcement to be a part of the government on Wednesday morning, following which party workers broke into celebrations. TVK chief Vijay meets Tamil Nadu Governor and stakes claim to form govt, but still short of numbers

Actor-turned-politician Vijay, founder of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), continued his political outreach on Tuesday, a day after his party emerged just short of a majority in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. As part of his public engagements, Vijay paid tribute to prominent social reformers by garlanding the statues of Periyar E V Ramasamy and Dr B R Ambedkar. The move is widely seen in political circles as an effort to position himself within the state’s long-standing Dravidian and social justice tradition. Vijay came to power by dislodging the DMK led by MK Stalin, which emerged from the Dravidian movement in the 1960s. Notably, sitting CM MK Stalin lost his seat to TVK candidate VS Babu. The opposition AIADMK, which also remained a powerful alternative to the DMK and ruled the state for over 30 years, is also a Dravidian party and follows the ideology of founder M G Ramachandran and late leader Jayalalithaa. The trailblazer surprised the country with a massive verdict in his maiden elections, with TVK securing 108 seats in the 234-member Assembly, falling 10 seats short of the 118 required for a simple majority. The party is now expected to explore alliances to form the government. Also Read: 'I will not resign, I did not lose': Mamata Banerjee accuses BJP, EC of collusion after Bengal loss Meanwhile, the TVK chief thanked Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, the most likely partner for the formation of a government, despite having only 5 seats to offer. Beyond politics, we shall prioritise the welfare of the people of Tamil Nadu." He also thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi, stating, "Thank you, Hon'ble @PMOIndia, for your greetings. The well-being of our people remains our only goal. Transcending politics, we shall focus on the State's progress and the welfare of the people of Tamil Nadu. We look forward to the Union Government’s support in this endeavour." He made this statement while responding to Modi's tweet in which the Prime Minister wrote, "Congratulations to TVK and Thiru Vijay on their impressive performance in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. I wish them the very best in their service to the people of the state."

The shape of the upcoming government in the state remains unclear as TVK will need an alliance or support from other parties to reach the halfway mark in the Assembly.

TVK Chief Vijay pays floral tribute to EV Ramasamy Periyar at Chennai party office after election win

Marking the 3rd anniversary of his political party Tamizhaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK), actor-politician Vijay addressed cadre on Monday, (Feb 2), at his party office in Panaiyur, near Chennai. His party is to make its electoral debut in the Tamil Nadu state elections that are due in less than four months. Expressing confidence about his party's electoral prospects, he said that on the polling day, Vijays and Vijis (his male and female fans and supporters) will step out of every home and queue up at the polling booth to vote for their party. These remarks are widely seen as Vijay's counter to the view that his popularity as an actor and massive fan following need not translate into votes. He also likened his fans and followers to blood relatives, adding that they cannot be bought by other parties. With barely four months to go for the polls, Vijay's TVK party has not yet formed any alliance, despite it having made public that it is willing to share power with potential allies. However, there have been signals from sections of the Congress party about a potential tie-up with Vijay's TVK. This comes at a time when the Congress has not agreed to a final seat-sharing deal with longtime ally DMK. Though he isn't a representative of the TVK, Vijay's father had recently made remarks about how Vijay's TVK could revive the Congress party's political fortunes. Throughout his campaign, Vijay has been unsparing in his criticism of Tamil Nadu's ruling DMK, and Chief Minister MK Stalin. Continuing his attacks against the DMK, Vijay said half-jokingly that even DMK Chief and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin, would prefer to vote for the TVK. Notably, in recent times, Vijay has not been as critical of the BJP and AIADMK, which comprise the opposition alliance in Tamil Nadu. Speaking about the emerging poll landscape in the state, Vijay said that it is being referred to as a three-cornered fight or a four-cornered fight. "There is the TVK(our party), then the DMK alliance, and then the alliance of the BJP and others. Irrespective of how many forces emerge, only TVK can defeat the ruling DMK," he added. In connection with his final film Jana Nayagan's release, Vijay has been facing challenges due to a censor certificate not being granted by the Indian Government's CBFC. Despite multiple Court hearings, there is no closure in the issue, which further prolongs the uncertainty over the film's release. Jana Nayagan's markers were targeting a release on Jan 9th, ahead of the Pongal festive week. Congress had alleged that the BJP was attempting to block the Jana Nayagan film release and attacking Tamil culture by using the Government machinery. DMK too had voiced out in favour of Vijay's film release. While parties such as the Congress and DMK voiced out in support of Vijay's film, interestingly, the actor-politician has maintained silence over his own high-profile film and the impact of its delayed release.
