The World Health Organization (WHO) said on Monday (January 23) that over five billion people are exposed to higher risks of heart diseases because of trans fats. The world health body has slammed the nations which have not taken appropriate actions to address the issue and act against the toxic substance.&nbsp;

Experts have said that the consumption of trans fat increases blood cholesterol levels and the risk of heart disease. Trans fat is a type of fat that has certain chemical properties. It is usually found in processed foods such as baked goods, snack foods, fried foods, etc. As reported, eating trans fats is responsible for up to 500,000 premature deaths from coronary heart disease each year around the world.&nbsp;

In 2018, WHO came up with the elimination of industrially produced trans fat globally. The target was set for 2023. Since its first call, the population coverage of best-practice policies has increased almost six-fold.&nbsp;

WHO stated that 43 countries with combined populations of 2.8 billion people have implemented best-practice policies for tackling trans fat in food.&nbsp;

But more needs to be done as despite efforts, five billion are left worldwide at risk from trans fats' health impacts. The report also mentioned that the global goal for its total elimination in 2023 remains unattainable at this time.&nbsp;

WHO Director-General, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said, "Trans fat has no known benefit and huge health risks that incur huge costs for health systems."&nbsp;

"By contrast, eliminating trans fat is cost-effective and has enormous benefits for health. Put simply, trans fat is a toxic chemical that kills and should have no place in food. It’s time to get rid of it once and for all," the WHO chief added.&nbsp;

WHO said that nine of the 16 countries currently with the highest estimated proportion of coronary heart disease deaths caused by trans fat intake do not have a best-practice policy. Such nations are Australia, Azerbaijan, Bhutan, Ecuador, Egypt, Iran, Nepal, Pakistan and South Korea.&nbsp;

WHO says over five billion people still exposed to trans fats' devastating health impacts

Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan on Friday launched the "Trans-Fat Free" logo during the 8th International Chefs Conference.

The campaign to end trans-fat is seen as one of the important steps to accelerate the 'Eat Right India'&nbsp;campaign led by the FSSAI under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

"In compliance with the Food Safety and Standards (Advertisement and Claims) Regulations, 2018, food establishments that use trans-fat free fats/oil and do not have industrial trans-fat more than 0.2g/100g of food are eligible to display the logo," an official release said.

Addressing the conference, Harsh Vardhan said that trans fats are the worst type of fats with known health risks.

"India is committed to eliminate it from the food supply and is progressing towards its objective of trans fat elimination by 2022 in a phased manner; a year ahead of the global target set by the WHO".

"The FSSAI is committed to reducing trans-fatty acids produced in industries by 2 per cent in a phased manner by 2022 and has launched `India @ 75," he added.

The minister said that chefs are a very important part of the food ecosystem.

"With an increase in the eating-out pattern, chefs carry an additional responsibility of ensuring that the food served is not just safe and tasty but also healthier and sustainable to the environment," he added.

He also admired the initiatives by FSSAI towards 'Eat Right India'&nbsp;campaign.Cardiovascular disease resulting from the consumption of trans-fats produced in industries leads to the death of 51,00,000 people worldwide and over 60,000 people in India every year.&nbsp;

Adults and children should consume a maximum of 10 percent of their daily calories in the form of saturated fat such as meat and butter and one percent from trans fats to reduce the risk of heart disease, the World Health Organization said on Friday.

The draft recommendations, the first since 2002, are aimed at reducing non-communicable diseases, led by cardiovascular diseases, blamed for 72 percent of the 54.7 million estimated deaths worldwide every year, many before the age of 70.

"Dietary saturated fatty acids and trans-fatty acids are of particular concern because high levels of intake are correlated with increased risk of cardiovascular diseases," Dr. Francesco Branca, Director of WHO's Department of Nutrition for Health and Development, told reporters.

The dietary recommendations are based on scientific evidence developed in the last 15 years, he added.

The United Nations agency has invited public comments until June 1 on the recommendations, which it expects to finalise by year-end.

Saturated fat is found in foods from animal sources such as butter, cow's milk, meat, salmon and egg yolks, and in some plant-derived products such as chocolate, cocoa butter, coconut, palm and palm kernel oils.

An active adult needs about 2,500 calories per day, Branca said.

"So we are talking about 250 calories coming from saturated fat and that is approximately a bit less than 30 grams of saturated fat," he said.

That amount of fat could be found in 50 grams (1.76 oz) of butter, 130-150 grams of cheese with 30 percent fat, a litre of full fat milk, or in 50 grams of palm oil, he said.

TRANS FATS

Trans fats occur naturally in meat and dairy products. But the predominant source is industrially-produced and contained in baked and fried foods such as fries and doughnuts, snacks, and partially hydrogenated cooking oils and fats often used by restaurants and street vendors.

In explicit new advice, WHO said that excessive amounts of saturated fat and trans fat should be replaced by polyunsaturated fats, such as fish, canola and olive oils.

"Reduced intake of saturated fatty acids have been associated with a significant reduction in risk of coronary heart disease when replaced with polyunsaturated fatty acids or carbohydrates from whole grains," it said.

Total fat consumption should not exceed 30 percent of total energy intake to avoid unhealthy weight gain, it added.

The recommendations complement other WHO guidelines including limiting intake of free sugars and sodium.
