<p>Days after the Tibetians highlighted the increased repression of the Chinese government on Tibet in the <a href="http://www.wionews.com/india-news/tibetan-national-uprising-day-begins-with-protests-against-chinese-suppression-35332">National Uprising day</a>, Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama claimed on Sunday that Tibet can remain in China, only if Beijing recognised and respected the region's distinct culture and autonomy.</p>

<p>The Dalai Lama said &nbsp;"Historically and culturally, Tibet has been independent. China took control of Tibet in 1950 in what it called a 'peaceful liberation'. So, as long as the Constitution of China recognises our culture and Tibetan autonomous region's special history, it (Tibet) can remain there."</p>

<p>Dalai Lama was speaking at a lecture on 'Role of Ethics and Culture in Promoting Global Peace and Harmony' in New Delhi.</p>

<p>Tibetans recently staged protests in parts of India and outside the United Nations office in Geneva, Switzerland highlighting the suppression of Tibetans by China.</p>

<p>Over 150 Tibetans have self-immolated themselves since 2009 due to the repressive policies of the Chinese government, reports suggest.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Dalai Lama, along with his followers, fled to India in 1959 after the invasion of Tibet by China.</p>

<p>While the Dalai Lama has time and again backed&nbsp;the idea of&nbsp; "One China",&nbsp;China calls the 82-year-old Buddhist monk a "separatist",&nbsp;seeking to secede Tibet from China.&nbsp;</p>
