Guillermo del Toro has bagged the award for the best director at the&nbsp;the 90th Academy Awards&nbsp;for his&nbsp;fantasy film &#39;The Shape of Water.&#39;

This was Del Toro&nbsp;is a Mexican film director, screenwriter, producer, and novelist who received his first nomination&nbsp;as director at the Oscars this year making him&nbsp;the third Mexican film-maker in the last five years to win best director.&nbsp;

Del Toro was born in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico on October 9, 1964. In his filmmaking career, del Toro has alternated between Spanish-language dark fantasy pieces.&nbsp;

Del Toro got his first big break when Cronos (1993) won nine academy awards in Mexico, then went on to win the International Critics Week prize at Cannes. Following this success, del Toro made his first Hollywood film, Mimic (1997), starring Mira Sorvino.

His other prominent feature films include - Cronos (1993), Mimic (1997), The Devil&#39;s Backbone (2001), Blade II (2002), Hellboy (2004), Pan&#39;s Labyrinth (2006), Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2008), Pacific Rim (2013), Crimson Peak (2015).

Del Toro&#39;s work is characterised by a strong connection to fairy tales and horror, with an effort to infuse visual or poetic beauty.&nbsp;He has a lifelong fascination with monsters, which he considers symbols of great power.Del Toro is known for his use of insectile and religious imagery, the themes of Catholicism and celebrating imperfection, underworld and clockwork motifs, practical special effects, dominant amber lighting, and his frequent collaborations with actors Ron Perlman and Doug Jones.

In addition to his directing works, del Toro is also a producer. His producing credits include films such as The Orphanage (2007), Julia&#39;s Eyes (2010), Biutiful (2010), Kung Fu Panda 2 (2011), Puss in Boots (2011), Mama (2013), and Kung Fu Panda 3 (2016).

The fantasy film The Shape of Water (2017) received critical acclaim and won a Golden Lion at the 74th Venice International Film Festival. Del Toro received an Academy Award for Best Director for the film, as well as the Golden Globe, BAFTA, Critics&#39; Choice, and Directors Guild of America.

'The Shape of Water' has received a whopping 13 nominations and has won four so far

Oscars 2018: The complete list of nominees

Hollywood is set for a real-life cliffhanger Sunday at the Oscars -- the race for best picture is coming down to the wire to cap an awards season overshadowed by scandal over sexual misconduct in showbiz.

Dark crime comedy &quot;Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri&quot; has begun to pull away in late betting for the industry&#39;s biggest prize, but Oscarologists believe fairy tale romance &quot;The Shape of Water&quot; and socially-conscious horror movie &quot;Get Out&quot; will make it a photo finish.&nbsp;

&quot;I don&#39;t remember a year with so much uncertainty. There are at least four strong possibilities to win,&quot; Variety&#39;s awards editor Tim Gray said, adding Christopher Nolan&#39;s sweeping war epic &quot;Dunkirk&quot; to the mix.

&quot;I&#39;m guessing that &#39;The Shape of Water&#39; will win, but that&#39;s just a guess.&quot;&nbsp;

The 90th Academy Awards -- hosted for the second straight year by late night funnyman Jimmy Kimmel -- will be beamed live around the world by ABC from Hollywood&#39;s Dolby Theatre.

The show caps a difficult few months during which the industry has declared war on the pervasive culture of sexual impropriety unearthed by the downfall of movie mogul and alleged serial sex attacker Harvey Weinstein.

With the #MeToo and Time&#39;s Up campaigns against sexual misconduct and gender inequality dominating the 2018 awards circuit, this year&#39;s Oscars gala is seen as an opportunity for Tinseltown to support female filmmaking.

Greta Gerwig is only the fifth woman in Oscars history to be nominated for best director, but faces tough competition from Guillermo Del Toro, the runaway favorite for &quot;The Shape of Water.&quot;

There was also the first nod in history for a female cinematographer, Rachel Morrison, who shot Dee Rees&#39;s racial drama &quot;Mudbound.&quot;

Avoiding another flub

The Time&#39;s Up initiative is not planning a coordinated protest on Sunday -- like the striking red carpet &quot;blackout&quot; at the Golden Globes.

But leaders of the movement told journalists there would be &quot;a moment that&#39;s been carved out&quot; during the ceremony.

&quot;It&#39;s really important that you know that Time&#39;s Up is not about the red carpet,&quot; said powerhouse Hollywood producer Shonda Rhimes (&quot;Grey&#39;s Anatomy,&quot; &quot;Scandal&quot;).

&quot;And those women you saw on the red carpet representing Time&#39;s Up are now off the red carpet working their butts off being activists.&quot;

In another nod to the women&#39;s movements, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has tapped past winners Jennifer Lawrence and Jodie Foster to present the best actress Oscar, according to Variety.

Traditionally, the previous year&#39;s best actor winner would present that statuette, but Casey Affleck, who triumphed in 2017 for &quot;Manchester by the Sea,&quot; withdrew under a cloud of sexual harassment accusations he denies.

One political statement on the red carpet may come in bright orange -- some A-listers will reportedly wear orange US flag pins in a call for tougher gun control.

Organizers are looking to rebound after last year&#39;s flubbed announcement by Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway of the best picture winner -- the trophy was initially given to &quot;La La Land,&quot; when the actual winner was &quot;Moonlight.&quot;

In a surprise turn of events, Beatty and Dunaway have been tapped to present the same prize this time around, according to The Hollywood Reporter, although the Academy did not respond to AFP&#39;s request for confirmation.&nbsp;

McDormand, Oldman in pole position

&quot;The Shape of Water,&quot; a Cold War-set story of love between a mute cleaning woman and a mystery merman-like creature, tops the nominations with 13, although observers expect the spoils to be fairly evenly spread.&nbsp;

&quot;Dunkirk&quot; heads into Sunday&#39;s gala in second place with eight nods, while &quot;Three Billboards&quot; picked up seven.

Teachers in his hometown, Guadalajara, Mexico, remember him coming to class with giant cockroaches, and friends recall helping him shoot his first movie at their school -- an eight-millimetre short film featuring a gelatinous monster.

&quot;There were no video cameras then. We had a Super 8,&quot; he tells AFP.

&quot;It was pure silliness. It was a lot of fun though. The movie was about a gelatinous monster that comes out of the toilets and starts running around our school.&quot;

They filmed the movie together, taking turns with the camera, he says. But the script was Del Toro&#39;s.

&quot;You had to send the film to the United States to be developed. It was an agonizingly long wait. Then you edited it with a special cutter and glued it together,&quot; says Aparicio.

After &quot;Nightmare&quot; (parts one and two), Del Toro made &quot;Matilde,&quot; a horror movie filmed at his grandmother&#39;s house. It bore many of his future trademarks, blending the supernatural with the religious imagery he grew up with in his devoutly Catholic household.

Del Toro&#39;s mother, Guadalupe, played the lead -- a wheelchair-bound woman who gets swallowed up by an ominous crack in her wall.

His mother also appeared in one of his first professional films, &quot;Geometria&quot; (1987), which featured his father, as well.

Del Toro, 53, comes from a world infused with all the terror and wonder of a fairy tale. When he was a boy, his father won the lottery, then used his newfound fortune to build an empire of car dealerships. He set about building a fantastical world within the family&#39;s stately new mansion, covering his bedroom walls with aliens and monsters.

But, as in many of his movies, the real monsters in the story turned out to be human -- in particular, the people who kidnapped his father in 1998, when Del Toro was just starting to make it in Hollywood.

The harrowing ordeal ended with fellow director James Cameron helping Del Toro put together the $1 million cash ransom to get his father released. After that, Del Toro moved the rest of the family to the United States.

Today, he splits his time between Los Angeles and Toronto. But &quot;at the bottom, he&#39;s still fundamentally Mexican,&quot; Meier says.

The Shape of Water, Lady Bird, Three Billboards Outside of Ebbing, Missouri are strong contenders

Now that Golden Globes is over and this year's first mega awards night was able to leave an impression with Hollywood stars coming out to support victims of abuse, dressed in black for the red carpet, the onus is now on Baftas 2018 to take the baton forward. The nominations for coveted UK-based awards are being announced today and movies "The Shape of Water", "Three Billboards Outside of Ebbing, Missouri" and "Get Out" are leading the race. One category that won't be announced is the EE Rising Star Award which is voted for by the public. The contest is currently between actors Daniel Kaluuya, Florence Pugh, Josh O’Connor, Timothée Chalamet and Tessa Thompson. The EE British Academy Film Awards will take place on Sunday, February 18 at the Royal Albert Hall. Jordan Peele`s &quot;Get Out,&quot; which satirizes suburban white guilt over racial inequality in the United States, is emblematic of the rise of genre films in this year`s awards season.

It has been almost a year since its release, and most movies brought out that far ahead of Hollywood`s various prize-giving ceremonies are long forgotten by the time the trophies are being polished.

Yet &quot;Get Out&quot; is up for two Globes on Sunday and entertainment website Eonline.com has been extolling its virtues as a genuine contender.

Guillermo del Toro`s &quot;The Shape of Water,&quot; a hot favorite among the movies vying for the best dramatic film Globe, has seven nominations in total.

The Cold War-era piece tells the story of a young, mute woman (Sally Hawkins) who works at night in a government laboratory and falls in love with a captive merman-like amphibian creature.

The 75th annual Golden Globes is expected to turn up the heat Sunday night with Hollywood A-listers looking forward to using&nbsp;the award ceremony for voicing their concerns and of course showing up in their best.&nbsp;

Hollywood, over the last one year, has been in the crosshairs of myriad <a href="http://www.wionews.com/india-news/golden-globes-marks-the-first-test-on-how-hollywood-handles-sex-scandal-on-live-television-28578" target="_blank">controversies</a> from producer Harvey Weinstein getting accused by more than 100 women from the film fraternity to actor Kevin Spacey being removed from his own Netflix series &quot;House of Cards&quot;&nbsp;after he&nbsp;too, was accused of sexual misconduct by fellow actress&nbsp;and 15 other women.&nbsp;

While 2017 saw the ugly side of Hollywood up front, the year also saw the release of some of the most mind-boggling movies with great scripts and incredible performances delivered by artists.&nbsp;

Now that Golden Globes is a few days away, we round up pre-Oscars prize-giving ceremony in the form of 10 fun-filled facts:&nbsp;

1. How it started

Golden Globes was founded in 1944 and were given out by journalists for the first 14 years of its running. These journalists were members of the&nbsp;Hollywood Foreign Correspondents Association, a precursor to the HFPA.

Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr took over the stage as impromptu masters of ceremony in 1958 and were a big hit on the stage. They were invited back as official hosts the following year.

From the years 1958 to 1963, the Golden Globes were only broadcast in Los Angeles. They started to get broadcast nationally from 1964.

2. The Prizes&nbsp;

Unlike other award ceremonies and most importantly Oscars, the Globes only recognises actors, directors, producers and writers. They don&#39;t give out awards for technical skills.&nbsp;

The total list of awards is 25 -- 14 in film and 11 in television.&nbsp;

3. The&nbsp;Winners&nbsp;

Actress&nbsp;<a href="http://www.wionews.com/world/entertainment-meryl-streep-is-the-most-golden-globe-nominated-actor-26561" target="_blank">Meryl Streep</a> has the most nominations in Golden Globes. She got her latest nomination for her role in &quot;The Post&quot;, her 31st in total. Out of all nominations, Streep has won the title eight times, one less than record-holder&nbsp;Barbra Streisand.&nbsp;

Jamie Foxx and Helen Mirren jointly hold the record for the most nominations in one year with three.

4. The Goof-ups

Actress&nbsp;Renee Zellweger was in the bathroom when her best actress award for &quot;Nurse Betty&quot; was announced in 2001. It led to Hugh Grant asking for her table for her whereabouts to give the award. She reached the stage just in time and announced to the audience that she had been cleaning lipstick off her teeth.&nbsp;

Zellweger wasn&#39;t the first to do this as&nbsp;Christine Lahti had gotten caught in a similar scenario three years earlier when she won the best actress for &quot;Chicago Hope&quot;.

5. The &#39;Big Five&#39;

The &#39;big five&#39;&nbsp;means the&nbsp;best picture, actor, actress, director and screenplay. &quot;One Flew Over the Cuckoo&#39;s Nest&quot; was the first movie to win all of the &#39;big five&#39;&nbsp;categories as part of a six-win haul in 1975.&nbsp;

It remained the only &quot;big fiver&quot; until &quot;<a href="http://www.wionews.com/life-fun/la-la-land-sweeps-golden-globes-2017-11064" target="_blank">La La Land</a>&quot; took home the major categories as part of a record-breaking seven-trophy clean sweep in 2017.&nbsp;

Earlier, &quot;Who&#39;s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?&quot; (1967) and &quot;The Godfather, Part III&quot; (1991) each received seven nominations but lost in every category, going home empty-handed.

6. Lifetime Achievement

The Cecil B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievement was first handed out in 1952 to Cecil B. DeMille.&nbsp;

Subsequent winners include Walt Disney, Judy Garland, Sidney Poitier and Jodie Foster.

7. Those Who Objected

Actor Marlon Brando refused to accept his Golden Globe for &quot;The Godfather&quot; in 1973 in protest against the Vietnam war. Two months later, he rejected an Oscar over the poor treatment of Native Americans in the film industry.

The producers of &quot;Z&quot; refused the award for best foreign language film in 1970 because they were angry it was left out of the prestigious best motion picture category.

8. The Trophy

The 24-karat gold-plated Golden Globe statuette costs around $800 to make and is 10.75 inches (27.3 centimetres) tall and 3.5 inches wide, weighing in at a hefty 5.5 pounds (2.5 kilograms).

After 2008, it was given a facelift and was then placed in a marble custom presentation box.

9. The Hosts 

NBC Late Night host Seth Meyers will be compering this year&#39;s show&nbsp;for the first time. He promises to use his&nbsp;political humour that he is rather famous for. He has indicated that Hollywood&#39;s sexual misconducts will also be treated with a fair punch of fun and satire in the night.&nbsp;

The movie, a romantic fantasy tale of uncanny attraction between a mute cleaner and a mysterious aquatic creature took home the best prize of the event: The Golden Lion for best film in competition.&nbsp;

The movie won over a jury headed by American actress Annette Bening and unlike previous times, the movie was a confirmed winner among the jury as well as the critics.&nbsp;

Accepting his award at the function, del Toro was moved with the adulation and support. He said, &quot;I believe in life, I believe in love and I believe in cinema.&quot;

The festival&#39;s second most prestigious honor, the Grand Jury Prize, went to&nbsp;Israeli filmmaker Samuel Maoz for &ldquo;Foxtrot&rdquo;. The movie is his first feature since taking home the Golden Lion for 2009&rsquo;s autobiographical war drama &ldquo;Lebanon.&rdquo; His work is&nbsp;presently one of five films shortlisted to be Israel&rsquo;s official Academy Awards submission.
