The German government's recent decision to introduce significant tax benefits for electric vehicles (EVs) is a strategic move aimed at stimulating sales, promoting environmental sustainability, and supporting the country's automotive industry.&nbsp;

According to the German newspaper Handelsblatt, the federal government's tax reductions are estimated to total EUR 585 million (USD 649 million) in 2025 and could potentially increase to 650 million euros by 2028, when the aid is expected to expire.

Key Tax Incentives:

Enhanced Depreciation for Businesses: One of the most significant tax benefits is the increased depreciation allowance for companies purchasing EVs. This allows businesses to deduct a larger portion of the EV's cost from their taxable income in the first year of ownership, providing immediate financial relief.&nbsp;

As part of the draft approved by Chancellor Olaf Scholz's cabinet on Wednesday, companies would be allowed to deduct up to 40 per cent in the first year and decrease progressively to 6 per cent over the next five years, ensuring a balanced approach to tax incentives.

Preferential Treatment for Company Cars: The government has also extended preferential tax treatment to electric and zero-emission company cars. Employees using these vehicles enjoy significantly lower car taxes compared to those driving traditional fuel-powered vehicles. This incentive is designed to encourage businesses to adopt EVs for their corporate fleets, contributing to a greener transportation landscape.

Increased Eligibility Threshold: To make the tax benefits more accessible, the government has raised the eligibility threshold for preferential tax treatment on company cars. Previously limited to vehicles valued at less than EUR 70,000, the new threshold is now set at EUR 95,000. This expansion allows for a wider range of EV models to qualify for the tax incentives, encouraging greater consumer choice and adoption.

The introduction of these tax breaks comes at a point where the German automotive industry has been facing increasing pressure to transition to electric vehicles. Volkswagen has been facing significant challenges in recent years, including rising costs, a challenging transition to EVs, weak demand from abroad, and declining business attractiveness due to insufficient government response and barriers to free trade. These challenges have led the company to consider closing local production sites in Germany, a move that would potentially lead to job losses, reduced economic activity, and potential disruptions to the supply chain.

While the industry has made strides in developing EV technologies, several challenges remain, including the need to invest heavily in research and development, establish charging infrastructure, and address consumer concerns about range and battery life.

Consumer durables and home appliances makers like Godrej Appliances, Panasonic, Philips Lighting and Intex want the government to lower taxes, give incentives to local manufacturing and increase customs duty on imports.

Besides, the ACE (Appliances &amp; Consumer Electronics) industry also wants the government to encourage manufacturing of energy-efficient products.

&quot;Consumer appliances as refrigerators, washing machines and ACs are no longer considered luxury items. Such consumer appliances need to be made more affordable to the consumers and be put in a lower tax bracket from 28 per cent to 18 per cent,&quot; said Godrej Appliances Business Head &amp; EVP Kamal Nandi.

The makers are also expecting tax reduction on the energy efficient 5-star and 4-star products to increase adoption by the consumers.

&quot;There should also be incentives for manufacturers to produce energy-efficient products which will be in line with the government&#39;s focus on sustainability as well as its Makein India initiative,&quot; Nandi added.

While Panasonic is looking for a hike in the customs duty for ACE products category such as washing machines and refrigerators to encourage local manufacturing.

&quot;With the BCD hiked on items such as smartphones, TV&#39;s microwaves and LED lamps, we expect the union government to take similar steps on other durable items as washing machines, and refrigerators to further encourage localised indigenous manufacturing,&quot; said Panasonic India and South Asia President and CEO Manish Sharma.

Expressing similar views, Philips Lighting India said customs duty on all finished lighting products and luminaries should be raised as the government had done on import of LED bulbs.&nbsp;

&quot;We also welcome the recent increase in customs duty for finished LED bulbs from 10 to 20 per cent and hope that the government will extend it to all finished lighting products and Luminaires,&quot; said Philips Lighting India Vice Chairman and Managing Director Sumit Joshi.

While, Intex has asked for the reduction of GST rates on parts and subparts as battery, shield used in the manufacturing of mobile phones to 12 per cent from the present 28 per cent.

&quot;All parts and subparts which are used in the manufacturing of mobile phones should be taxed at 12 per cent as similar to GST rates of mobile phone as higher GST rates increase the cost of mobile phones hampering the manufacturing of phones in India,&quot; said Intex CFO Rajeev Jain.&nbsp;

He further said that the GST rates for power banks, television tuner cards and webcams should also be reduced to 18 per cent.
