Indian Navy's Operation "Samudra Setu"&nbsp;to evacuate Indians from the Maldives will begin on Friday and ahead of that INS Jalashwa has entered Male port on Thursday.

INS Jalashwa plans&nbsp;to evacuate about 750 stranded Indians. INS Jalashwa is the Indian Navy’s Landing Platform Dock (LPD) with its capacity to generate 3MW of electrical power, 60,000 gallons (212 tons) of fresh water a day and extensive medical facilities, which is ideally suited to undertake Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) missions.

Indian envoy to Maldives Sunjay Sudhir speaking to WION exclusively on the operation on Wednesday said, "Around mid-day of May 8, the first group of about 700 Indians will set sail back home&nbsp;to Kochi, that will be the first lot. After that, we are planning few other evacuations though the Navy ship."

INS Jalashwa Indian Navy's largest Amphibious platform (Landing Platform Dock) can carry 1,000 troops. With the current social distancing norms in place, the ship can carry 500-700 people. The repatriation will be in two&nbsp;phases - two&nbsp;ships with the first group being taken to Kochi, then Tuticorin. Priority will be given to medical cases, women and those who have&nbsp;lost jobs.

The Indian Navy said today that it has&nbsp;launched Operation "Samudra Setu"(Sea Bridge) as part of national effort to repatriate Indian citizens from overseas due to the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/gathering-of-not-more-than-50-persons-allowed-at-weddings-home-ministry-296813">coronavirus </a>crisis.

The Navy said Jalashwa and Magar ships are presently enroute port of Malè in&nbsp;Maldives to commence evacuation operations for stranded Indians from May 8 as part of Phase-1.

The Navy said the evacuated personnel will disembark&nbsp;at Kochi in Kerala and entrusted to the care of state authorities.

"This operation is being carried out in close coordination with ministries of defence, external affairs, home affairs, health and various other agencies of the government of India and state governments," it added.

Meanwhile, the home ministry said that passengers found to be "symptomatic" shall be immediately taken to a medical facility and the remaining passengers shall be taken to "suitable institutional quarantine facilities to be arranged by the states."

"These passengers shall be kept under institutional quarantine for 14 days," the MHA said.

"If they test negative after 14 days, they will be allowed to go home and will undertake self-monitoring of their health for 14 more days as per protocol," the home ministry said, adding,"the remaining persons will be shifted to medical facility by states and governments of union territories."
