The bench, led by Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna and Justice Sanjay Kumar, added that the advocate commissioner’s survey report must remain confidential. The chief justice said, “We hope and trust the trial court would not take any further steps in the matter until the high court takes up the proceedings in relation to the matter and passes suitable orders.” The Supreme Court’s intervention comes after the mosque committee filed a plea against the survey of the mosque site in Sambhal. Chief Justice Khanna added, “In case any revision appeal is preferred before an appropriate forum, same would be listed within three working days. Late Thursday (Nov 28) night, the Uttar Pradesh government appointed a three-member committee, led by former Allahabad High Court judge Devendra Kumar Arora, to investigate the incident. They alleged that the Shahi Jama Masjid was built on the site of an ancient “Harihar Temple” and sought access to the location, claiming it as a temple. Protests turned violent, with stone-pelting from the crowd and police using tear gas to control the situation. The managing committee of the Shahi Jama Masjid then approached the Supreme Court, requesting an immediate halt to the survey. In their petition, they argued that such surveys of historical religious sites could inflame communal tensions and harm the secular principles of the country. (With inputs from agencies)

As the city of Sambhal in Uttar Pradesh is recovering from the impact of the violence that broke out over the survey of a Mughal-era mosque, Samajwadi Party MP Zia-ur-Rehman Barq and local SP MLA Iqbal Mehmood's son, Sohail Iqbal, have been booked by the police in connection with the incident. The city administration and the police said they have evidence that the MP committed "provocative acts".

The violence led to the deaths of four people, while&nbsp;dozens more, including 24 police and administrative officials, were injured. A total of 25 people have been arrested so far.

Talking about the cause of the deaths, Divisional Commissioner Aunjaneya Kumar Singh said that prima facie it appears that country-made weapons were used. Seven FIRs have been registered over the violence.

"There is evidence against MP Ziaur Rahman Barq that he has committed provocative acts. Action has been taken against him under the provisions of the BNS," Singh said.

Superintendent of Police Krishan Kumar said on Monday that besides Barq and Iqbal, four others were also named in the FIR. He added that Barq's "Jama Masjid ki hifazat" (protection of Jama Masjid) remark led to the mobilisation of the mob, as per PTI.

The MP was reportedly in Bengaluru at the time of the violence and not in Sambhal. On this being pointed out, Kumar said Barq's name was included in the FIR based on his previous statements.

"Due to Barq's statement earlier, the situation worsened. He was issued a notice earlier for this," he added.

The survey of the mosque was ordered by a local court in response to a petition that claimed that the Shahi Jama Masjid was built on the ruins of a temple. The Hindu side claims that Mughal emperor Babur demolished the temple in 1529.

A mob threw stones at the survey team and torched vehicles. District Magistrate Rajender Pensiya said that people who lived within a radius of 10-15 kilometres were responsible for the vandalism.

One survey of the mosque was completed last Tuesday, and this was the second survey.
