British household goods company Wilko has collapsed owing to big debts, its boss announced Thursday, impacting about 12,500 jobs as high inflation and interest rates hurt consumers and businesses.

The group, operating out of 400 UK stores as well as online selling cleaning and garden products in addition to other small household items, has formally entered administration, a process that could see parts of the business saved.

"We've all fought hard to keep this incredible business intact but must concede that time has run out, and now we must do what's best to preserve as many jobs as possible, for as long as is possible, by working with our appointed administrators," Wilko chief executive Mark Jackson said in an open letter on its website.

Wilko has appointed PricewaterhouseCoopers as administrators of the distressed company, founded in 1930 and headquartered in the town of Worksop, central England.

"It is incredibly sad that a well-loved, family business that has been on the high street for over 90 years has had to go into administration," said Zelf Hussain, a partner at PwC heading the administration team.

"Many high street retailers are facing a number of well-documented challenges and Wilko has been significantly impacted by the headwinds facing the industry, including inflationary pressure and rising interest rates."

Hussain added in a statement that the administrators would "engage with parties who may be interested in acquiring all or part of the business."&nbsp;

"Stores will continue to trade as normal for the time being and staff will continue to be paid," he said.

British customers and businesses continue to face soaring costs, with UK annual inflation at 7.9 per cent, the highest among G7 countries.

In a bid to cool price rises, the Bank of England has raised its key interest rate 14 times in a row since the end of 2021, to 5.25 per cent, a 15-year high.

That has helped cut the inflation rate from a 41-year peak of 11.1 per cent in October last year.

The GMB union blamed poor management for the collapse of Wilko.

"The 12,000... workers now facing potential redundancy will take little solace that with better management the situation that has befallen Wilko was, sadly, entirely avoidable," GMB national officer Nadine Houghton said in a statement.&nbsp;

"GMB has been told time and time again how warnings were made that Wilko was in a prime position to capitalise on the growing bargain retailer market, but simply failed to grasp this opportunity."

Jackson said there had been "significant work... to streamline costs and transform the way the business operates".

The entire controversy started last year, after a joint report by French newspaper Le Monde and investigative websites The Insider and Bellingcat, revealed that Auchan's branch in Russia supplied the Russian army with products worth 2 million rubles ($27,000). However, the report fell short of revealing as to who gave them the information. They attributed the report to anonymous sources.&nbsp;

Further, Auchan last year said it has no plans to exit its business from Russia, even as many other western companies left the Russian market after the war started in Eastern Europe.&nbsp;

Auchan was "very surprised" over the report and in its defence said, "We do not voluntarily and actively fund or participate in any fundraising for Russian forces."&nbsp;Auchan's chief executive Yves Claude in an earlier interview gave his reasons for not pulling out its business from Russia. He said that if Auchan exits Russia it would lead to losing assets or legal issues for its managers.&nbsp;

Reacting to the argument, Kuleba had said, "Apparently, job losses in Russia are more important than the loss of life in Ukraine."&nbsp;

Ryan Cohen, the billionaire investor, is preparing to acquire a large stake in Nordstrom in order to shake up its board, said Reuters citing people familiar with the matter. Nordstrom, the upscale retailer, is lagging behind its rivals.&nbsp;Cohen, who built his fortune by co-founding online pet retailer Chewy Inc and cemented it with investments in videogame retailer GameStop and Apple Inc, would like to replace at least one director on Nordstrom's 10-member board, the people said.

Apparently, Cohen is not happy with Mark Tritton, who chairs the the compensation committee and has been on the board of directors since 2020. Cohen has privately called Tritton, a former chief executive of Bed Bath &amp; Beyond, "conflicted and unqualified," said the people, who were not permitted to discuss the private negotiations. Bed Bath &amp; Beyond is preparing to file for bankruptcy, Reuters reported this week.

Over past five years, Nordstrom shares have dropped roughly 55 per cent. Ratings agency Fitch again downgraded the company last month. Fitch said that Nordstrom's "operating trajectory has been weaker than most retailers."

"While Cohen hasn't sought any discussions with us in several years, we are open to hearing his views, as we do with all Nordstrom shareholders," a company representative said.

The Wall Street Journal first reported Cohen's stake in Nordstrom.

Cohen is now one of the company's top five non-insider shareholders alongside investment firms BlackRock and Fidelity, the people familiar with his stake said.
