The 118th Congress has the largest proportion of members in American history who identify as being a race or ethnicity other than white. As of 3 January, 2023, 133 members of Congress—or one-fourth of the 534 voting members—identify as Black, Hispanic, Asian American, American Indian, or Alaska Native.

This is backed up by a recent <a href="https://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2023/01/09/u-s-congress-continues-to-grow-in-racial-ethnic-diversity/">Pew Research Center analysis</a> that used data from the Congressional Research Service. The results are in line with earlier studies that showed how racially and ethnically diverse Congress is becoming. The diversity record of the previous Congress was surpassed by each of the last seven Congresses.

In the current (118th) Congress, there are 60 Black members, 54 Hispanics, 18 Asian Americans, and 5 American Indians or Alaska Natives.

Additionally, the representation difference is comparable to that observed 40 years ago, when 94 per cent of Congress was made up of white people and 80 per cent of the country's population identified as white.

While certain racial and ethnic groups continue to have poor representation, others have proportionate representation to their percentage of the US&nbsp;population. As per Pew research, 13 per cent&nbsp;of House members identify as Black, which is a figure that is similar to the US&nbsp;population overall.

While 19 per cent of Americans identify as Hispanic, only 11 per cent&nbsp;of House members do, and just four&nbsp;per cent&nbsp;of House members identify as Asian American, compared to six per cent&nbsp;of the population.

John Bailey, president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, on Saturday encouraged the idea of representation of Indian cinema in new Academy museum in Los Angeles.&nbsp;

He also stated that opening an office in India is an "excellent idea".

"We have an office in London and in New York. India is the largest film-making country in the world. India makes up to 1,800 movies a year, which is more than four numbers of times that we make (Hollywood) in the US. It's an excellent idea... Mumbai would be such a strong connection to all of South-East Asia. It makes a lot of sense," Bailey, who is in India along with his wife Carol Littleton, told media here.

"The Academy is not a company or a corporation... The reason to have an office anywhere is based upon the services the Academy can provide to the membership. So, the key to having an office in Mumbai or in India would be to being able to service the members and the community and expand the outreach. Last year, the Academy accepted 928 new members from 56 countries... The Academy is not just a Hollywood bubble," he added.

Talking about the Academy museum, he said, "The Academy museum is going to open early next year. We hoped that it would open by the end of this year, but due to various events we have decided to open it in March or April probably."

He added, "I am very proud to be here as the first President of the Academy to visit India. Carol and I come from the ground level of film-making... We bring a perspective and an understanding of the film-making process."

Asked about representation India cinema abroad, Bailey said, "I think that they need a much broader distribution in large parts of the world. I know there are Indian films they continue to show at Cannes and in Venice. But it`s very hard certainly in Europe and the US for these films to get much of the exhibition in the theatres... It`s such a rich tradition. Most of us only know Indian cinema today from a very limited perspective of musical and dance films of Bollywood, but there is so much more. There are ways to do it."

A court in Bangladesh on Thursday allowed police to detain two men over the attack claimed by militant group Islamic State on a cafe in the capital, Dhaka, that killed 20 hostages, mostly foreigners. 
 
The case has drawn criticism from human rights groups who say the suspects were illegally detained and denied access to a lawyer. A lawyer for one of the two men, Hasnat Karim, said his client was innocent and demanded his immediate release.&nbsp; 
 
Karim, who holds dual British and Bangladeshi citizenship, and Tahmid Hasib Khan, a student of Toronto University, were dining separately with family and friends when gunmen stormed the Holey Artisan Bakery on the evening of July 1. 
 
The suspected Islamist militants singled out non-Muslims and foreigners, killing Italians, Japanese, an American and an Indian before security forces stormed the eatery to end the 12-hour siege. Two police also died in the operation. 
 
On Thursday, a Dhaka court remanded the men in custody for eight days for interrogation, with police official Masudur Rahman telling reporters they had been arrested on Wednesday night &quot;from two different places&quot;.&nbsp;

The police assertion of arrests at different sites appeared to run counter to relatives&#39; statements that the men were held at unknown locations after the attack. 
 
&quot;The authorities have finally admitted that Mr Karim is in their custody,&quot; his London-based lawyer, Rodney Dixon, told Reuters in a statement. 
 
&quot;They have had more than sufficient time to make any inquiries. There is clearly no evidence to charge him and he should be let go without any further delay.&quot; 
 
Rights group Amnesty International has criticised the detention of the men as having denied them their fundamental right to legal representation.
