Nine Indian universities and institutions are among world's top 50 in the QS subject-wise rankings even as some of the top institutions on the list including three IITs, two IIMs and JNU saw a drop in their positions.
According to the 15th edition of the World University Rankings by Subject, announced on Wednesday by London-based Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), India celebrates 12 top-50 positions across the subject rankings and the broad faculty areas, earned by nine institutions.
Leading the way is the Indian School of Mines (ISM), Dhanbad, which ranks 20th globally for Engineering-Mineral and Mining, making it the country's highest-performing subject area. Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay and Kharagpur have been ranked at 28th and 45th spot for Engineering-Mineral and Mining. However, both institutions have seen a drop in their positions.
IIT Delhi and Bombay which shared the 45th rank for Engineering and Technology have improved their position to bag the 26th and 28th spot, respectively.
The two institutions have also improved their rank for Engineering-Electrical and Electronic to enter the top 50 list. Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Ahmedabad and Bangalore continued to be among world's top 50 for Business and Management Studies but their ranking has dropped since previous year. While IIM Ahmedabad's ranking dropped to 27 from 22, that of IIM Bangalore slipped to 40 from 32.
IIT Madras (Petroleum Engineering) and Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) (Development Studies) continued to be among world's top 50 but their ranks also dropped by few spots.
"A total of 79 Indian universities &ndash; 10 more than last year &ndash; feature 533 times across this year's rankings, marking a 25.7 per cent increase compared to the previous edition. This includes 454 entries in individual subjects and 79 appearances across the five broad faculty areas," QS said in a statement.
In the latest edition of the QS subject-specific rankings, India has the fifth highest number of new entries behind China, the US, the UK and Korea, and ranks 12th for the number of overall entries.
"The high number of the new entries featured in the rankings is a continuation of a trend of the country's growing higher education ecosystem, both in terms of size and quality," QS added.
The new entrants from India in top 100 include IIT Madras and Vellore Institute of Technology for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence and IISc Bangalore and IIT Kanpur for Engineering-Mineral and Mining.
Jessica Turner, CEO at QS, flagged that while India shows exceptional strength in areas like AI, green and digital skills, critical gaps remain in sustainability and entrepreneurial capabilities.
"Closing these gaps through higher education reform and skills alignment is essential for ensuring India's graduates remain competitive in the global economy and are equipped to lead the industries of tomorrow," Turner said.
The 2025 QS World University Rankings by Subject include 533 entries from 79 Indian universities, up from 424 entries last year. Of these, 156 entries improved, 101 declined, and 154 remained stable, while 122 new entries made their debut in this edition.
Computer Science &amp; Information Systems remains India's most represented subject, with ranked entries increasing from 28 last year to 42 this year &mdash; placing India fourth globally for this discipline, behind only the US (119 entries), the United Kingdom (62) and China (58).

Indian universities secure top spots in QS World University Rankings 2025

A London-based firm has declared India’s Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) as the highest-ranked university in the country for various subjects. Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) ranked JNU at 20th position globally for Development Studies. The second-highest ranked university is IIM Ahmedabad, clinching the 22nd position globally, while Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences came at the third position, with the 24th rank in the world.

In total, 69 Indian universities were featured in the ranking of the top 500, with a total of 424 entries in the 2024 QS World University Rankings. It’s interesting to note that 72 per cent of the entries this year are either new to the list, have shown improvement, or have maintained their positions.

The most entries have been filed by the University of Delhi (30 entries), IIT Bombay (28 entries) and IIT Kharagpur (27 entries). IIT Madras this year had 22 entries, of which eight improved, six declined and four remained unchanged.

The CEO of QS, Jessica Turner, highlighted challenges before the Indian education system.

“One of the biggest challenges faced by India is educational – providing high-quality tertiary education in the face of exploding demand: this much was recognised by 2020’s NEP (National Education Policy), which set the ambitious target of a 50% gross enrolment ratio by 2035. It should therefore provide some reassurance that the number of Indian programmes featuring across our 55 subject rankings and five broad faculty areas has increased this year – from 355 to 454. QS also notes that several programmes at India’s three privately-run Institutes of Eminence have made progress this year, demonstrating the positive role that well-regulated private provision can have in enhancing India’s higher education sector,” she highlighted.

Turner concluded: “While there is still a lot of work to be done to improve standards, access to higher education, universities’ digital readiness and global competitiveness, it is clear that India is taking significant steps in the right direction.”

QS World University Rankings: JNU secures 20th rank globally, 1st in India

The Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, is the world's top research university as per the citations per faculty indicator, while the Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati, is ranked 41st in the category, according to the coveted QS World University Rankings released on Wednesday.

The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore has got a perfect score of 100 out of 100 for the citations per faculty (CPF) metric in the analysis by London-based Quacquarelli Symonds (QS). In the overall rankings, three Indian institutions have figured in the top 200 universities of the world list.

Lauding the institute, Union Minister Prakash Javadekar in his social media handle said: "Proud of Indian Institute of Science, IISc Bangalore, to achieve the first rank as a research university with the perfect 100 score on CPF measure."

According to the 18th edition of the rankings, the India Institute of Technology (IIT), Bombay, is India's top ranked institution for the fourth consecutive year at the QS World University Rankings 2022. However, it has fallen four places to 177 from its 2021 rank of 172.

IIT Delhi, has become India's second-best university, having risen from the 193rd rank to 185 since last year. It has done so by overtaking the IISc which bagged the 186th rank, a notch below last year's rank, according to the rankings.

IIT, Madras, has risen 20 places and now ranks joint-255th, which is its highest position since 2017. IIT-Kharagpur is ranked at 280, while IIT, Guwahati, in the joint-395th rank has entered the global top-400 for the first time.

While IIT, Hyderabad, in the 591-600 rank band, enjoys its first year ever in the top 600, the Jawaharlal Nehru University has made its debut in the QS World University Rankings and is placed in the 561-570 band.

Indian universities have also improved their research impact, relative to global competitors. 17 of India's 35 universities have seen a rise in their CPF score, against only 12 drops in CPF, according to the rankings. However, Indian universities continue to struggle in QS's measure of institutional teaching capacity.

No Indian university ranks among the top 250 in the faculty/student ratio category. For the QS World University Rankings, institutions and universities were judged on six indicators-- academic reputation, employer reputation, citations per faculty, faculty/student ratio, international faculty ratio and international student ratio.

This year, rankings listed the world's top 1,300 universities - 145 more than in the last year's edition, which can be found in 97 locations. Of 13,000 institutions, 6,415 were found eligible for the survey analysis, and 1,705 were assessed for the final table. The results accounted for the distribution and performance of 14.7 million academic papers published between 2015 and 2019, and the 96 million citations received by those paper. They also accounted for the expert opinions of over 1, 30,000 academic faculty and over 75,000 employers.

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology achieved a record-extending 10th consecutive year as world number one. The University of Oxford has risen to second for the first time since 2006, while Stanford University and the University of Cambridge share the third spot.
