One of Colombia's most infamous drug lords admitted guilt to cocaine trafficking charges in a New York court on Wednesday (January 25), as part of a plea agreement.&nbsp;

The Gulf Clan, the greatest narcotics trafficking organisation in Colombia, was led by Dairo Antonio Usuga, also known as "Otoniel." The 51-year-old was extradited to the US last year and initially entered a not-guilty plea to drug trafficking charges.

Usuga has pleaded guilty to three counts and agreed to pay $216 million. He will have to serve at least 20 years in jail, but the maximum sentence is life.

Usuga and the Gulf Clan were charged with smuggling at least 73 tonnes of cocaine into the nation illegally between 2003 and 2012.

Usuga was the most wanted man in Colombia until he was captured in the northwest of the nation in October 2021 following a significant military operation.

Tong, 24, was arrested on July 1, 2020, hours after the enactment of the national security law, which punishes what China deems as subversion, secessionism, terrorism and collusion with foreign forces with up to life in prison. 
 
Tong faces charges of terrorism and inciting secession, as well as an alternative charge of dangerous driving causing grievous bodily harm, which can lead to up to seven years in prison. He pleaded not guilty to all charges. 
 
Tong has been denied bail. Hong Kong's common law has traditionally allowed defendants to seek release unless prosecutors can show lawful grounds for their detention. Under the new law, the burden is now placed on the defendant to prove they will not break the law if released on bail. 
 
On Tuesday, the Court of Appeal upheld a decision to deny Tong a trial by jury, citing a threat to the personal safety of jurors and their family members. 
 
His trial will be held by a panel of three judges instead: Esther Toh, Anthea Pang and Wilson Chan. 
 
Hong Kong's Judiciary describes trial by jury as one of the most important features of the city's legal system, a common law tradition designed to offer defendants additional protection against the possibility of authorities overreaching their power. 
 
Article 46 of the security law, drafted by Beijing, where courts are controlled by the Communist Party and conviction rates are close to 100%, states three instances in which juries can be scrapped: protecting state secrets, cases involving foreign forces and protecting jurors' safety.

Congress President Rahul Gandhi has pleaded "not guilty" to the defamation case filed against him by an RSS worker.&nbsp

Rahul entered his plea at a court in Bhiwandi, near Thane in Maharashtra, where he had said at a rally in 2014 that the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh had assassinated Mahatma Gandhi.&nbsp

The Bhiwandi court framed charges against Gandhi on Tuesday and set August 10 as the next date of hearing.&nbsp

News reports quoted Rahul as saying the BJP and RSS could slap as many cases as they wanted on him but&nbsp"we will fight them and win".&nbsp

Rahul had earlier approached the Supreme Court asking for the case to be quashed.&nbsp

The court however told Gandhi in 2016 that he should not have resorted to "collective denunciation" of an organisation and would either have to apologise or face trial.&nbsp
