The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued show-cause notices to Bollywood actors Shah Rukh Khan, Ajay Devgn and Tiger Shroff over their advertisement for a pan masala brand. The regulator alleged that the campaign amounts to surrogate advertising for a product currently banned in the state.

The production, distribution, sale, and transportation of gutka and pan masala which include tobacco and nicotine are prohibited for a year in Telangana, effective immediately.

A notification has been issued by Telangana's Commissioner of Food Safety, outlawing the production, storage, distribution, transportation, and sale of tobacco- and nicotine-containing products such as pan masala and gutka. According to the department, the order will be in place for one year, beginning Friday, May 24.

The prohibition is enforced&nbsp;in accordance with section 2.3.4 of the Food Safety and Standards (Prohibition and Restriction of Sales) Regulation 2011, and clause (a) of sub-section (2) of section 30 of the Food Safety and Standards Act 2006.

“In exercise of the powers conferred under clause (a) of Subsection (2) of Section 30 of Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 read with 2.3.4 of Food Safety and Standards (Prohibition and Restriction on Sales) Regulation 2011 and in the interest of public health, Commissioner of Food Safety, Telangana State hereby prohibits the manufacture, storage, distribution, transportation and sale of Gutkha / Pan masala which contains tobacco and nicotine as an ingredient which is packed in sachets/pouches/package/containers etc., or by whatever name it is called in the entire State of Telangana for a period of one year with effect from 24th May 2024,” the statement read.

Smokeless tobacco and nicotine products like pan masala and gutka are harmful and can have negative effects on one's health.

Gutka and pan masala consumption has been related to oral cancer, submucous fibrosis, and other health issues. Tobacco usage was responsible for 55% of cancer cases in Varanasi, India.

In India, the percentage of people who use smokeless tobacco is 21.4% (199.4 million), whereas the percentage of adults who use smoking tobacco is 10.7% (99.5 million). The Lancet study found that quit rates are low.

Telangana bans gutka and pan masala containing tobacco, nicotine for a year

The Delhi government has extended the ban on the manufacture, storage, sale or distribution of gutkha, pan masala and any other tobacco products for one year in the national capital.

The Food Safety Department has issued a notification extending the ban on these products.

The notification has been issued by Food Safety Commissioner L R Garg.

A stickler for cleanliness, the saffron-robed 44-year-old chief minister had administered a sanitation pledge to officials a day after he took over as the UP CM and asked them to ensure that the pledge is effectively implemented on the lines of Swachh Bharat Mission of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The officers were made to repeat after him a &quot;swachhata&quot; pledge - &quot;I will not litter, nor allow anybody to do it. I will devote 100 hours every year, to make the pledge of cleanliness come true and I will propagate the message of Swachch Bharat Mission in every nook and corner of the country.&quot;

Adityanath, who is the head priest of Gorakhnath Temple in Gorakhpur, is known to take a round of the Mutt and temple premises, inspecting the cleanliness of the place after practising Yoga between 4 to 5 AM every day.

The actor said that he was deeply shocked and saddened to learn the pan masala product he was advertising may include ingredients that can cause cancer, reported People magazine.

&quot;As a man who has spent decades championing women&#39;s healthcare and environmental protection, I was distressed to learn of Pan Bahar&#39;s unauthorised and deceptive use of my image to endorse their range of pan masala products.&nbsp;I would never have entered into an agreement to promote a product in India that is dangerous to one&#39;s health,&quot; Brosnan said in a statement.

The 63-year-old James Bond star said his contract stated that he was to advertise a &quot;breath freshener / tooth whitener,&quot; which wouldn&#39;t include an ingredient that turns saliva red.

According to the actor he agreed to advertise a single product only, and that it was presented as &quot;all-natural containing neither tobacco, supari, nor any other harmful ingredient&quot;.

&quot;Having endured, in my own personal life, the loss of my first wife and daughter as well as numerous friends to cancer, I am fully committed to supporting women&#39;s healthcare and research programs that improve human health and alleviate suffering,&quot; the statement continued.
