Several short-range ballistic missiles were fired by North Korea on Monday (April 22) towards the sea off its east coast, stated South Korea's military. To take part in the testing of the nationwide nuclear management system, known as "nuclear trigger", North Korea's artillery forces joined the first such drills of the country on Monday (April 22) to showcase the country's diversified nuclear capabilities and retaliate against "provocative and invasive" military exercises of the United States and South Korea, reported KCNA. The simulation drills involved firing artillery using mock nuclear warheads and maneuvering troops in a nuclear counterattack posture, if nuclear crisis alerts were issued, as per KCNA. Kim "guided a combined tactical drill simulating a nuclear counterattack involving super-large multiple rocket artillerymen," the report stated. The rockets "hit their island target" nearly 352 kilometres (219 miles) away, the report added. It is believed that North Korea has been making preparations to launch another spy satellite after a reconnaissance satellite was successfully placed in orbit in November. Last week, North Korea said that a strategic cruise missile was fired by the country to test a large warhead as well as a new anti-aircraft missile. South Korea calls it 'blatant provocation', Japan issues alert South Korea's military on Monday (April 22) stated that the missiles covered 300 kilometres from the Pyongyang area before they splashed down in the water east of the Korean peninsula. The launch was branded as a "blatant provocation." The launch was also confirmed by Japan, which also issued an alert, as its government spokesman stated that one missile - which went at a maximum altitude of 50 kilometres - landed outside of the EEZ of the country. The launch of missiles comes after North Korea's ally Russia used its United Nations Security Council veto in March to end monitoring of sanctions violations by the UN on Pyongyang for its nuclear and weapons programme.
