A man in Mumbai has been found in possession of the new Rs. 50 note which is yet to be released by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). In what can be considered a serious security breach, this news comes after RBI announced the introduction of new currency notes for the already in use Rs. 50 denomination.

As reported by The Indian Express, the man was spotted in Mumbai posing with the new note clenching it between his fingers. However, the origin of the note is yet to be determined.

Speaking to the English daily, government officials have confirmed that the new Rs 50 note of the Mahatma Gandhi (new) series will be issued by the RBI soon.

The new bank notes will have the signature of the incumbent RBI Governor Urjit Patel.

RBI has informed that the note will have the motif of Hampi with Chariot on the reverse, depicting the country’s cultural heritage. The colour will be a fluorescent blue and it will also have other designs like geometric patterns aligning with the overall colour scheme. The note will be of a dimension of 66 mm x 135 mm.

All old Rs 50 banknotes will continue to be legal tender.

Meanwhile, the new Rs 200 note has been introduced to aid in the day-to day transactions and to help replenish the reduction of the new Rs 500 notes which were introduced post demonetisation.
