A needle has been found in a strawberry in New Zealand, police said Monday, the second incident to hit the country two months after a <a href="http://www.wionews.com/world/after-strawberry-australia-police-find-needle-in-apple-and-banana-166469">contamination crisis erupted in Australia</a>.

The needle was found in a punnet sold in the small South Island town of Geraldine over the weekend, a New Zealand police spokesman said.&nbsp;

The supermarket owner Garry Sheed said he had since taken all strawberries off the shelves but would not comment on whether the punnet was from Australia or New Zealand.&nbsp;

This is the second such incident in New Zealand since the scare was sparked in September, when more than 200 reported incidents of needles hidden in strawberries were reported in Australia.&nbsp;

Some of those cases were found to be hoaxes or false complaints.

A 50-year-old woman who worked at one of the strawberry farms where the tampered produce was grown has since been <a href="http://www.wionews.com/world/woman-charged-over-australia-strawberry-needle-scare-176667">arrested in Queensland and charged with contaminating goods</a>.

The New Zealand Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) said the person who found the needle in Geraldine was not harmed.

"The matter has been referred to the police who are leading the criminal investigation," a ministry spokesman told reporters.&nbsp;

"At this stage, MPI does not have any reason to believe this is more widespread than the single discovery. However, as a precautionary measure the store has removed strawberries from shelves."

A woman has been charged after a "complex" investigation into an Australian strawberry scare where needles were found stuck into the fruit, police said Sunday, in a crisis that sparked nationwide panic.

Queensland state authorities offered a large reward and the national government raised jail terms for such crimes after sewing needles were found in plastic boxes of the fruit sold in supermarkets in September.

Since the first case came to light when a man was taken to hospital with stomach pains after consuming strawberries, more than 100 alleged incidents of pins and needles found in fruit, mostly strawberries, were reported in September around the country.

One incident was also reported in neighbouring New Zealand.

Police said a 50-year-old woman was arrested and charged on Sunday&nbsp;with seven counts of contaminating goods "following a complex... and extensive investigation".

"This is a major and unprecedented police investigation with a lot of complexities involved," Detective Superintendent Jon Wacker said in a statement.

"The Queensland Police Service has allocated a significant amount of resources to ensure those responsible are brought to justice."

She faces up to 10 years' imprisonment and is due in a Brisbane court on Monday.

Police did not reveal the reasons and motives behind her alleged involvement.

The sabotage crisis led supermarkets to pull the fruit from the shelves and saw farmers dump tonnes of the unwanted berry. The government raised the maximum prison sentence for fruit tampering from 10 to 15 years.

Queensland Strawberry Growers Association spokeswoman Jennifer Rowling welcomed the news and said the crisis had a "crippling impact" on the state's strawberry growers.

"However, it is disconcerting that the charges relate to only six or seven punnets (plastic boxes) of strawberries, proving that the majority of... incidents were copycats or false reports," she told national broadcaster ABC.

In an incident of what appears to be severe medical negligence, surgeons at a government hospital in Uttar Pradesh`s Mathura allegedly `left` a needle inside the head of a child after his surgery.

The matter came to light when the parents of the six-year-old boy noticed a sharp object near the stitches while changing the boy`s bandage, following his surgery at the K D Medical College.&nbsp;

&quot;My child got a head injury, and then we took him to the hospital. When his wound was healed, we came to know that the doctors left a needle inside his head,&quot; said Dau Dayal, the father of the child.&nbsp;

Dayal even claimed that when he informed the hospital about the matter, they allegedly dissuaded him from filing a complaint.&nbsp;
