Ukrainian forces on Monday (June 3) said that they have successfully struck a Russian S-300 missile system with the help of Western-supplied weapons in the Russian territory.

“It burns beautifully. It’s a Russian S-300. On Russian territory. The first days after permission to use Western weapons on enemy territory,” Ukrainian government minister Iryna Vereshchuk wrote on Facebook, along with a picture which purportedly showed the strike.

The strikes took place days after United States President Joe Biden allowed Ukraine to carry out limited strikes&nbsp;while making use of US weapons in Russian territory near Kharkiv after various European nations removed restrictions on how they could use the weapons.

It remains unclear if Ukraine used the US-supplied weapons in the strike.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky praised US President Joe Biden for allowing some strikes in Russian territory as a “step forward” which will help the army in defending the embattled Kharkiv region.

Some experts have raised questions over whether the new freedom will help Ukraine significantly bolster its ability to repel Russia's invasion.

However, as per military analysts that may not be the case because the United States has been firmly standing in not permitting Ukraine to use the most formidable munition against Russia, which is the long-range missiles called ATACMS. This missile is capable of hitting targets 300 kilometres (nearly 200 miles) away.

Ukraine is allowed to use only shorter-range missiles known as GMLRSl. These missiles have a range of around 70 kilometres (around 40 miles).

The occupied Crimea has been frequently targeted by Ukraine after it was annexed by Russia using UK-provided “Storm Shadow” missiles in 2014.

In late 2022, Ukraine also launched strikes on Kharkiv and Kherson in an attempt to liberate the regions occupied by Russia in the early weeks of the war.
