The accident occurred at around dawn on a highway linking Oaxaca and the neighbouring state of Puebla, the statement said.

Those injured were hospitalised, the statement added. Mexico's national immigration agency said that 55 foreigners were aboard the bus. Peruvians were also among the victims, it said.

Friday's accident is the latest crash involving US-bound migrants. Thousands of migrants from different countries have been travelling across Mexico in buses, trailers and atop freight trains in an attempt to reach the US-Mexican border.

Last Sunday, at least 10 Cuban migrants were killed and 25 injured when a cargo truck carrying them overturned in Chiapas.

The Mexican government has admitted to being overwhelmed by the number of migrants crossing its territory, the vast majority of whom are from Central America, Venezuela, Cuba and Haiti.

Mexican authorities said they detained more than 189,000 migrants last month, while the US border patrol has reported 1.8 million apprehensions between October 2022 and August 2023.

On Thursday, US and Mexican officials pledged to redouble their efforts to tackle irregular migration through measures such as modernising border security, and increasing legal avenues among others.&nbsp;

At least three people died after a boat carrying migrants illegally capsized in the Aegean Sea, just hours after a similar tragedy claimed 11 lives, according to reports.

Friday's tragedy—which is the third since Wednesday— brings the total death toll at least 27 from three accidents amid heightened migrants'&nbsp;activity in the Greek waters.

The sinkings came as smugglers increasingly favour a perilous route from Turkey to Italy, which avoids Greece’s heavily patrolled eastern Aegean islands that for years were at the forefront of the country’s migration crisis.

The coastguard said it had found three bodies and rescued 57 people on Friday from a boat that overturned and sank near the island of Paros in the central Aegean, reports AFP

Hours earlier, 11 bodies were recovered hours after a boat ran aground on an islet north of the Greek island of Antikythera on Thursday evening. &nbsp;

Ninety people stranded on the islet were rescued, including 27 children and 11 women, the coastguard said.

Earlier on Wednesday, a dinghy carrying migrants capsized off the Greek island of Folegandros, killing at least three people.

Thirteen people were rescued, while dozens remain missing, Greek authorities said.

The UN refugee agency UNHCR had termed the Folegandros accident the worst in the&nbsp;Aegean&nbsp;Sea&nbsp;this year.

"This shipwreck is a painful reminder that people continue to embark on perilous voyages in search of safety," AFP quoted Adriano Silvestri, the UNHCR's assistant representative in Greece, as saying.

The UNHCR estimates that more than 2,500 people have died or gone missing at&nbsp;sea&nbsp;in their attempt to reach Europe from January through November this year, reports AFP.

Nearly one million people, mainly Syrian refugees, arrived in the European Union in 2015 after crossing to Greek islands close to Turkey.

Dozens of migrants killed in boat sinking accidents on Greek waters, third in a week

Mexico called on the United States Thursday to investigate the use of force by border patrol agents against members of a Central American migrant caravan who tried to rush the US-Mexican border on New Year's.

"The foreign ministry sent a diplomatic cable today to the United States embassy about the incident that occurred on January 1 in the border zone... In it, the ministry requested an exhaustive investigation of events that day," it said in a statement.

Mexico also repeated its call for an investigation into a similar incident on November 25, when some 1,000 migrants from the caravan tried to force their way into the United States and were pushed back by border patrol agents.

In both incidents, US Border Patrol fired tear gas to stop the migrants from crossing the border fence between the Mexican city of Tijuana and San Diego, California. They also fired rubber bullets during the November incident.

Around 100 migrants were involved in the New Year's border crossing attempt.&nbsp;

Most were forced to turn back by the tear gas. Twenty-five were arrested, US Border Patrol said.

Mexico "regrets any act of violence along the border" and "reiterates its commitment to safeguarding the human rights and safety of all migrants," it said.

The migrants are part of a caravan of several thousand people that left Honduras in October and spent more than a month trekking across Mexico to reach the US border.

The caravan has triggered frequent tirades from US President Donald Trump, who says it includes dangerous criminals and regularly cites it as evidence of the need for his planned border wall.

It once comprised some 7,000 people, but it has gradually dispersed as migrants cross the border, move elsewhere in Mexico or return home. Around 1,500 migrants are currently staying at the shelter set up for the caravan in Tijuana.

The government of Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, who took office on December 1, has so far sought to avoid confrontation with the Trump administration over the issue.

Instead, it is lobbying for a US-Mexican plan to promote economic development across the region as a means to slow migration.
