A shooting at a busy nightclub in the Mexican town of Jerez left eight people dead and injured five, the police said Sunday. The incident took place late Friday night. Heavily armed men arrived at the bar in two vehicles, burst into the club and began shooting indiscriminately, a report from the Security Secretariat said.&nbsp;

Six people died on the spot and two more succumbed to the injuries at the hospital while being treated. Five people remain hospitalised for gunshot wounds. Local media reports said that victims included club employees, musicians and customers.&nbsp;

"The Jerez municipal authorities are deeply saddened by the painful events that took place in the last hours, and mayor José Humberto Salazar Contreras, expresses his solidarity with the families who have lost their relatives," a statement by local authorities read.

It added that the Public Prosecution office has begun an investigation into the incident to determine the reason behind the shooting.

The bar, called "El Venadito," is located in the centre&nbsp;of Jerez, an area about 60 kilometers southwest of the state capital city of Zacatecas.

Jerez has seen a wave of violence in the last few years, forcing hundreds of residents of nearby rural communities to leave their homes.&nbsp;

Zacatecas is a part of the list of the 10 most problematic regions in Mexico. The state is a strategic point for the US-bound drug trade. Jalisco New Generation and Sinaloa drug cartels have been at the center of violent disputes.

A shooting left nine dead and two wounded at a&nbsp;bar&nbsp;in the central Mexican state of Guanajuato, which has increasingly suffered from cartel violence, local authorities said Thursday.

An armed group arrived at the&nbsp;bar&nbsp;around 9 pm&nbsp;Wednesday in the town of Apaseo el Alto, outside of Celaya, and opened fire on those inside, authorities said in a statement.

Five men and four women were killed in the gunfire and two more women were hurt, the town said. The injured women were in stable condition.

The assailants had not yet been identified, officials said, adding that units of state and federal authorities as well as the National Guard would be moved into the area.

The town said two posters "alluding to a criminal group" were left at the scene. In&nbsp;Mexico, cartels frequently leave messages after killings for other groups or authorities.

Guanajuato, an industrial hub, has been ravaged by turf wars between cartels in recent years. Last month, 12 were killed at a&nbsp;bar&nbsp;in the city of Irapuato, following a nearby shooting that left 10 dead in September.

Mexico's president, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, took office in 2018 promising to reduce cartel violence. Homicides have dropped slightly in 2022, though Lopez Obrador's term is on track to be the deadliest in modern history.
