The films "Sueño en Otro Idioma" (I Dream in Another Language) and "La region Salvaje" (The Savage Region) were the big winners at the 60th edition of Mexico's Ariel awards in this capital.

Tuesday night's red carpet outside Mexico City's Palace of Fine Arts was lined with ribbons that read "It's not just three, it's all of us," alluding to the three film students kidnapped and allegedly murdered in Tonala, a city in western Jalisco state last March.

The stage was later taken over by speakers demanding that authorities halt the wave of violence scourging the country and giving reminders of the thousands of forced disappearances and murders happening each year throughout Mexico.

Ernesto Contreras' "I Dream in Another Language" was nominated for 16 awards and took home six statuettes, including Best Picture, Best Sound, Best Original Score, Best Original Screenplay, Best Photography and Best Actor, which went to Eligio Melendez.

Amat Escalante's "The Savage Region" was awarded Best Special Effects, Best Visual Effects, Best Editing, Best Direction and Best Actress in a Minor Role, going to Bernarda Trueba.

Karina Gidi took home the Ariel for Best Actress for her role in the film "Los adioses" (The Goodbyes) and Andres Almeida was awarded Best Actor in a Minor Role for "Tiempo compartido" (Timeshare).

As many as 114 contenders participated in the latest edition of the Ariel awards, including 58 feature films and 73 shorts, as well as 13 Ibero-American films.
