Gender playing a role in a medical scenario might seem bizarre at first.&nbsp;but once you peel the layers, you understand why this might be true. Medical students&nbsp;not being properly taught about how to deal with women’s health issues is one of the reasons.

The study, which was published on Monday in the Annals of Internal Medicine, examines people between the ages of 65 and older. About 8.15 per cent of women treated by female physicians died within 30 days as compared with 8.38 per cent of women when treated by male physicians.&nbsp;

The difference might seem small, but erasing this gap could save up to 5000 women’s lives every year.

Some experts aren’t convinced that the new study proves a physician’s gender makes a big difference, but here's what the study found.

The study included about 800,000 male and female patients who were hospitalised from 2016 through 2019. The gender of the doctor had no impact on the risk of death or hospital readmission of male patients. The data only showed the gap between the treatments of female patients when treated by different genders.

Though the study did not explain why women feel better when treated by other women, other studies have shown that women are less likely to experience “miscommunication, misunderstanding and bias” when treated by female doctors, said lead author of the study Dr Atsushi Miyawaki. Miyawaki is a senior assistant professor of health services research at the University of Tokyo Graduate School of Medicine.

The study is part of a growing field of research examining why women and minorities tend to receive worse&nbsp;medical care than men and white patients. For example, women and minority patients are up to 30 per cent more likely to be misdiagnosed than white men.

“Our pain and our symptoms are often dismissed,” said Dr. Megan Ranney, dean of the Yale School of Public Health. “It may be that women physicians are more aware of that and are more empathetic.”

Dr Ronald Wyatt, a former chief science and chief medical officer at the Society to Improve Diagnosis in Medicine, a non-profit research and advocacy group, said there is a tendency in doctors to harbour sexist stereotypes about women, regardless of age.

“The notion that women’s symptoms are more emotional or their pain is less severe or more psychological in origin”, said Wyatt.

Women seem to experience fewer of these problems when treated by other women. A study published by JAMA Surgery in 2021 showed the same results. It found that women patients developed fewer complications if their surgeon was female.

Wyatt said the country needs to take several steps to better care for women patients, including “de-biasing training” to teach doctors to overcome stereotypes.

The healthcare system also needs to increase the number of women physicians in leadership, recruit more female doctors and do a better job at retaining them, he said further.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, women are required to undergo ultrasounds no less than 48 hours before either by pill or surgical abortion to determine the gestational age and location of the fetus and the pregnancy's viability.

In Wyoming, abortion is legal&nbsp;and the outcome of a lawsuit which challenges&nbsp;banning the procedure is pending. The bill was aimed at the only full-service abortion clinic in the state - Wellspring Health Access.&nbsp;

While announcing the veto, Gordon said that the measure would have “properly regulated” clinics. He said that the amendments included by lawmakers have made them vulnerable to legal challenges.

In a statement, Gordon said, “The state is closer than ever to a decision on the constitutionality of abortion in Wyoming." He added that the bill “had the potential to further delay the resolution of this critical issue for the unborn.”

As per the clinic officials, who had opposed the bill, most abortions were administered pills for abortion at Wellspring, however, the clinic has also performed surgical abortions as well.

The measure will require abortions at any clinic to be carried out by only a licensed physician who has admitting privileges at a hospital, which is no more than 10 miles away.

In a statement to the Associated Press, clinic founder Julie Burkhart said that this would result in additional new costs to renovate Wellspring to meet ambulatory surgical facility standards while getting “medically unnecessary” admitting privileges for its doctors.

To meet the ultrasound requirement, women will also have to travel a lot and take time off their work, said Burkhart.&nbsp;

She claimed the bill would close down the clinic and hurt the people who require abortion services.

“Outlawing abortion will never serve as a vehicle for making this health care obsolete,” she said.

US: Governor bans trans medical care for minors, vetoes abortion restrictions

Montana on Friday (April 29) has become the latest American state to ban or restrict gender-affirming medical care for transgender kids. The ban is set to take effect on October 1. On Monday, the lawmaker stood defiantly on the House floor with her microphone raised as protesters shouted “Let her speak,” disrupting House proceedings for at least half an hour.

House Speaker Matt Regier refused to let Zephyr speak on the House floor until she apologised and she has not, the report said. And the Montana Freedom Caucus deliberately misgendered Zephyr using male pronouns in a letter saying the lawmaker should be censured.

Lambda Legal, the American Civil Liberties Union and the ACLU of Montana, meanwhile, said they would file a court challenge against the ban. The Montana Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics said the bill is an "overly broad blanket ban" that takes decisions that should be made by families and physicians and put them in the hands of politicians.&nbsp;

As per the new law, health professionals who provide care banned by the measure could have their medical licences suspended for at least a year. Such professionals could be sued in the 25 years following the banned procedure if the patient suffers physical, psychological, emotional or physiological harm. The law states that physicians cannot hold malpractice insurance against such lawsuits. It also prohibits public property and employees from being involved in gender-affirming treatment.

The parents of transgender children in Montana testified the bill infringed on their parental rights to seek medical care for their children.

On April 17, Montana Governor Greg Gianforte signaled his willingness to sign the bill when he offered some amendments to make it clear that public funds could not be used to pay for hormone blockers, cross-sex hormones, or surgical procedures. In a letter accompanying the amendments, Gianforte said the bill protects Montana's children from permanent, life-altering medical procedures until they are adults, mature enough to make such serious decisions.&nbsp;
