Deputy Commissioner Krissy Barrett of the Australian Federal Police explained that, while detectives discovered no evidence of particular targets or timing for a violent act, the suspects were deemed a significant risk to public safety. The operation had nothing to do with the forthcoming Anzac Day, a national celebration in honour of fallen soldiers.

The arrests follow a recent knife attack at a Sydney church, which led to terrorism charges against a 16-year-old. The teen allegedly spoke in Arabic about the Prophet Muhammad being disrespected following the stabbing of Bishop Mar Mari Emmanuel and Reverend Isaac Royel at Christ the Good Shepherd Church, which was being broadcast live online during a service.&nbsp;

ASIO Director-General Mike Burgess said, "Australia's security service is always doing its thing to provide security intelligence that enables the police to deal with these problems when we have immediate threats to life or anything else that's evolving," Burgess said.

Many of the accused in Thursday's trial have connections to Rainsy's Cambodia National Rescue Party -- which a court dissolved in November 2017 -- while others are human rights activists.

Many defendants have fled the country fearing arrest.

Ney Leak, an opposition political activist who faces charges over posting messages supportive of Rainsy's return, said she was "innocent".

American-Cambodian human rights activist Theary Seng is accused of conspiracy to commit treason and incitement to commit a felony.

United Nations Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Cambodia Rhona Smith said since June 2019 more than 150 people associated with the dissolved opposition party have faced arrest.

After two hours the judge split the case in two, following lawyers' requests for more time to prepare.

Some defendants sought permission to choose their own legal representation rather than use ones appointed by the court.

Hearings are expected to resume in January and March.

Two people, including a child, were feared dead Tuesday in a mass stabbing attack that also injured 17 people in the Japanese city of Kawasaki, the local fire department said.

"One man and one female child are showing no vital signs, said fire department official Yuji Sekizawa, employing a phrase commonly used in Japan to mean the victims have died but the death has not yet been certified by an official medical professional.

Footage broadcast on local TV stations showed multiple police cars, ambulances and fire engines at the scene. Emergency medical tents were put up to treat the wounded.

The fire department said 17 others were injured in the attack, among them more children.

"A man stabbed them," another spokesman for the department, Dai Nagase, earlier told AFP.

"We received an emergency call at 7:44 am, which said four elementary schoolchildren were stabbed."

Police said one suspect, a man, had been detained. NHK said he had stabbed himself, suffering a serious wound. There was no immediate indication of a motive.

The broadcaster said two knives were spotted at the scene, but there was no immediate confirmation from officials.

The attack took place at the time of the morning commute and school run, with one eyewitness saying it occurred by a bus stop.

"I heard the sound of lots of ambulances and I saw a man lying near a bus stop bleeding," the man, who was not identified, told NHK.

"There is another bus stop near the elementary school and I also saw elementary schoolchildren lying on the ground... It's a quiet neighbourhood, it's scary to see this kind of thing happen," he added.

Japan has one of the lowest rates of violent crime in the developed world and mass attacks are extremely rare.
