Mahatma Gandhi: 151st anniversary of Satyagraha's heirloom

An amicus curiae who was asked by the Supreme Court to determine whether there was any "mysterious" person who fired the fourth bullet which killed Mahatma Gandhi, told the top court on Monday that there was no evidence which pointed to this and that the father of the nation was killed by no one but Nathuram Godse, media reports said.

The top court had asked senior advocate Amrendra Sharan to examine all documents pertaining to Mahatma Gandhi assassination case and determine whether there was any evidence to prove the four bullet theory raised by Pankaj Phadnis, a trustee of Abhinav Bharat, who insisted that four shots were fired at Mahatma Gandhi and the fourth bullet fired by a mysterious person took the life of the father of the nation.

Mr Sharan, who was assisted by two more advocates, filed the report after examining nearly 4,000 pages of trial court records and the Jeevan Lal Kapur Inquiry Commission report of 1969 in the assassination case, media reports said.

The court had passed the order on a petition filed by Pankaj Phadnis seeking re-investigation of the case.

In his petition, Phadnis had said that Veer Savarkar, the founder of Abhinav Bharat, was not behind the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi and had asked for the constitution of a new Commission of Inquiry to look into the issue.
