Environmental groups and even industry associations have been calling for the controversial mine to be stripped of its operating permit ever since a massive landslide rolled over the open pit Tuesday. &nbsp;

The Environment Ministry Saturday said in a statement it was withdrawing the mine's "environmental permit", without which it cannot operate.

According to a preliminary experts' report, the mine's managers didn't take the necessary precautions even though they were aware of cracks in the mine's slag heap. &nbsp; &nbsp;

Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar said earlier Saturday that six managers at the mine had been arrested Friday evening, and two others released with conditions.

According to Turkish press reports, a Canadian citizen working for the Anagold company that runs the mine was among the detained.&nbsp;

Toronto and Denver-based SSR Mining holds 80 per cent of Anagold, with the rest held by Turkish company Lidya.

The mine, which employs 667 people, closed for a few months after a 2022 cyanide leak caused by a burst pipe but then re-opened after its operator paid a fine, prompting outcries from Turkey's opposition parties.

Efforts to find the missing miners have been slowed by the risk of fresh landslides. &nbsp;

"Clearing the mass of earth that covers the riverbed is our priority, and we want to avoid the risk of contaminating the water," Bayraktar told a press conference near the site of the accident in the north-east of the country. &nbsp;&nbsp;

According to experts, the earth could contain cyanide used to extract gold, which risks polluting the region which is a watershed for the Euphrates River.

The minister said water is being tested daily in nine different locations and there is no health risk for the moment.&nbsp;

They are hard to find because of the lack of serial numbers, the fact that they are not regulated and that you do not need a background check to get one, there are no records on the number in circulation. But police forces around the United States are noticing a big uptick in the number of ghost guns they are seizing.

Regulators in the US on Wednesday stripped the telecommunications license of Chinese state-owned Pacific Networks. This is the latest blow to Chinese businesses in a simmering confrontation between the US and China.

Washington had previously revoked the permits of China Telecom and China Unicom, and the Federal Communications Commission has now given 60 days to Pacific and its subsidiary ComNet to cut service.

"The companies' ownership and control by the Chinese government raise significant national security and law enforcement risks," the FCC said in a statement, adding Beijing could monitor or disrupt US communications.

ComNet did not immediately reply to a request for comment.

The revocation of Pacific's operating authority comes as US President Joe Biden has pressed ahead with a strategy of confronting China broadly in line with that of his predecessor Donald Trump, whose approach sent tensions soaring.

Relations have been fraught between the world's two biggest economies on multiple fronts, including trade, human rights, Taiwan and the Covid-19 pandemic.

China Telecom is China's largest fixed-line operator, but it had faced trouble in the United States for years, particularly during Trump's presidency, as his administration repeatedly clashed with Beijing over trade.

The telecoms companies have fought back against the restrictions, with China Unicom saying in a statement in January that the FCC's decision was "without any justifiable grounds and without affording required due process."

Hong Kong's June 4th Museum, dedicated to commemorating the victims of China's 1989 crackdown on pro-democracy protesters in and around Beijing's Tiananmen Square, said on Wednesday, it would temporarily close due to a licensing investigation. 
 
The museum said in a statement that officers from the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department (FEHD) entered its premises on Tuesday, claiming it had not obtained a public entertainment venue licence and was potentially in breach of regulations. 
 
FEHD said in a statement its probe was launched after it had received a complaint that the venue operated without a licence. 
 
The museum, opened a decade ago and run by the Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements of China, said it would seek legal advice, and close until further notice to protect the safety of staff and visitors. 
 
"Facing the current difficult political situation, the Alliance deeply believes that Hong Kongers will not forget June 4," the statement said. 
 
The Alliance "hopes Hong Kongers will continue to be wise, flexible and determined to commemorate June 4 legally, safely, peacefully, rationally in their own way, at a suitable time and place, such that the truth will not be forgotten." 
 
The inspection raises concerns over freedom of speech in Hong Kong, which traditionally holds the largest June 4 vigil in the world to commemorate the crackdown. Mainland China bans commemorations and heavily censors the topic. 
 
After Beijing set the financial hub onto an authoritarian path with its imposition of a sweeping national security law last year, fears have grown that such vigils, which typically draw tens of thousands,&nbsp;would not be allowed any more. 
 
Police have cited coronavirus restrictions to ban the vigil for the second consecutive year this year. Authorities have warned the public that taking part in an unauthorised assembly raises the risk of up to five years in prison, while 'advertising or publicising'&nbsp;illegal rallies may lead to up to 12 months.
