Police in Islamabad have registered a sedition case against Member of National Assembly (MNA) Mohsin Dawar and human rights activist Imaan Mazari as well as several students who participated in a protest against racial profiling and surveilling of Baloch students at a university in the Pakistani capital, Friday Times reported. 
 
Earlier this week, several Baloch students gathered outside the National Press Club in Islamabad to protest the harassment and profiling of Baloch students and the "prevalent culture of fear" at the Quaid-e-Azam University (QAU) in Islamabad.

The students reported multiple instances of harassment and interrogation by an individual who they identified as 'Major Murtaza'. 
 
During the peaceful demonstration, police attacked the students and snatched away several students'&nbsp;phones. 
 
In response, students moved to block the road next to the press club.

Activist and lawyer Imaan Mazari, who is the daughter of Human Rights Minister Shireen Mazari, was also manhandled by the police when she urged them to return the students'&nbsp;phones.

A court here on Tuesday reserved its order on the anticipatory bail plea of <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/saradha-chit-fund-scam-former-kolkata-police-commissioner-rajeev-kumar-seeks-more-time-to-appear-before-cbi-249713">former Kolkata Police Commissioner Rajeev Kumar</a>, who is accused of tampering with evidence in Saradha scam case.

District Sessions Judge Md Shabbar Rashidi heard the arguments from both the sides and reserved the order.

Kumar in his plea contended that he was merely a part of the special investigation team (SIT) probing the case and that there were several officers above him in the hierarchy.

The <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/saradha-chit-fund-scam-cbi-issues-lookout-notice-against-rajeev-kumar-221738">CBI</a>, on the other hand, sought the custodial interrogation of Kumar.

Earlier today, a special court in Barasat had refused to hear the anticipatory bail plea, saying it does not have the jurisdiction to pass an order on the application.

Special Court Judge Sanjib Talukdar had asked Kumar to move Barasat's District Sessions Court for relief in the matter.

For quite some time Kumar has been avoiding appearing before the CBI despite being summoned after the Calcutta High Court withdrew protection from the arrest granted to him in the case.

Kumar was a part of the SIT constituted by the state government to probe the scam before the Supreme Court transferred it to the CBI.

Earlier, the CBI had said it needs to interrogate the former Kolkata Police Commissioner in the case.

Indonesian police have apologised and pledged disciplinary action after officers draped a live snake around the neck of a suspect to persuade him to confess during an interrogation session in the easternmost area of Papua.

A video circulated online shows a man being questioned about stolen mobile phones seated with his hands tethered behind his back yelling in distress as a snake is pushed towards his face by an officer.

The man, who can be seen writhing on the ground for much of the time is asked by an officer, "How many times have you stolen mobile phones?"

The suspect later responds by saying, "Only two times."

During the video, a voice can be heard ordering the man to open his eyes and at one stage threatens to put the snake into his mouth and under his trousers.

In a statement, Jayawijaya police chief Tonny Ananda Swadaya issued an apology, saying, "The investigator was not professional in doing his job".

Swadaya added that the officers had been acting on their own initiative to try to get a confession, saying the snake was non-venomous and tame.

"We have taken stern action against the personnel," he said, adding the officers themselves had not physically attacked the man.

Papua police spokesman Ahmad Musthofa Kamal said the case was being investigated by the internal affairs unit and if violations of the law or code of conduct were proven action would be taken.

Reports of human rights abuses by security forces often emerge from Papua, where a separatist movement has simmered for decades.

The former Dutch colony, the resource-rich western part New Guinea island, was incorporated into Indonesia after a widely criticized U.N.-backed referendum in 1969.
