<p>Not so long ago, the term 'brain drain' referred to the loss of skilled manpower from developing nations like India to foreign countries such as the US. Today, comparable levels of emigration are taking place from India to a larger number of nations. But the term 'brain drain' is not heard as much as it was in the past, in media or academic circles. The migration of skilled labour, such as software engineers and doctors, could be considered a kind of export. Celebrating the material success of the Indian diaspora is one way of looking at this. It is exporting something consequential: human beings. While China became the world's workshop, India is increasingly becoming the world's labour pool. That observation is accurate, going by global as well as Indian government data. The number of India-born people living abroad was estimated at 18.5 million in 2024 by the United Nations, which is roughly 6 per cent of all international migrants. Of this total, the US hosts 5.69 million, the UAE 3.90 million and Canada 3.61 million. India's skilled labour migration is expanding beyond traditional destinations. When placed against youth unemployment and talent retention issues, it amounts to a brain drain. Record remittances are the silver lining, but the balance might tilt.
