India's health ministry said today that 1,993 <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/coronavirus-impact-maruti-suzuki-records-zero-sales-in-april-for-first-time-in-companys-history-296045">coronavirus</a> cases were reported in the last 24 hours with the total number of cases in the country rising to 35,043.

The ministry asked the state and district administration in the country to ensure "focused efforts in Red&nbsp;and Orange&nbsp;zones to break the chain of transmission through effective and stringent containment measures".

During the press conference, the empowered group chairman on coronavirus said that the total demand for ventilators is 75,000 out of which 19,398 ventilators are available and 60,884 ventilators have been ordered.

"DRDO has developed three types of new PU coated nylon/ polyester and technology transfer to manufacturers of India," PD Vaghela, chairman of the empowered on coronavirus, said.

"Demand for PPE kits has been projected at 2.01 crore in India. We have placed orders for 2.22 crore kits out of which 1.42 crore kits are being procured in the domestic market," Vaghela said, adding."1.87 lakh kits are being produced daily in the country."

Meanwhile, the ministry of home affairs allowed movement of migrant workers, tourists, students and other persons stranded at different places to be transported by special trains.

The Railway ministry said that on arrival at the destination, passengers will be received by the state government, who would make all arrangements for their screening and quarantine if necessary&nbsp;

The home ministry said that no separate passes are required for traffic of trucks and goods carriers, including empty trucks.

"The recovery rate is now 25.19 per cent. A progressive recovery rate has been observed," India's health ministry official &nbsp;Lav Agrawal said.

The health ministry asserted that the recovery rate was 13.06 per cent 14 days ago while it added that the fatality rate was at 3.2 per cent.

"Comorbidities was found in coronavirus patients in 78 per cent of the deaths," the health official said, adding," doubling rate of the cases has now increased to eleven days."

On the question on tests, the health official said: "As far as testing and treatment protocol is concerned we have to use RT-PCR test only."

During the press conference, the home ministry official said that it is considering a proposal by many state governments to run "special trains" to transport students and migrant labourers.

In fact, a UP government official said that Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath has appealed to migrant workers not to travel back on foot with the government making arrangements to get them back.

"People will have to undergo necessary medical screening before boarding the buses for Uttar Pradesh. A hundred buses have left Madhya Pradesh to bring back people to Uttar Pradesh and we are sending people to Madhya Pradesh in 40 buses," UP chief secretary Awanish Awasthi said.

Karnataka too witnessed a rise in numbers with 11 new COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours. The total number of coronavirus cases has now risen to 534 in the state which includes 20 deaths. At least 215 patients have been cured and discharged, officials said.

Meanwhile, health minister Harsh Vardhan said that for the last thee&nbsp;days, the doubling rate of the virus is 11.3 days in the country.&nbsp;

As the number of cases continued to rise, West Bengal reported 33 new cases in the last 24 hours taking the number of active cases in the state to 550 even as Srinagar district administration said 55 persons have been discharged from quarantine in the past week with the total number of persons discharged after successful quarantine in the district climbing to 1,985.

"There were some who tried to spread rumours that there are no beds in hospitals of Kolkata to get admitted. There are still 790 beds ready for coronavirus patients in the city," chief minister Mamata Banerjee declared.
