<p>The government has of late been pilloried for its handling of the economy, the state of which critics says has been worsened by the twin &quot;shocks&quot; of demonetisation and GST.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Most of the blame for the state of the economy has fallen on Jaitley.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Jaitley said demonetisation was necessary to get rid of black money.&nbsp;</p>

<p>On GST, he said the idea of the goods and services tax had been introduced by the Congress.&nbsp;</p>

<p>He added that the upcoming Gujarat polls would lay to rest all questions, and that they would be the surest barometer of whether people supported the Narendra Modi-led government&#39;s policies or not.&nbsp;</p>
