<p>India is stepping up its drone surveillance system in border areas to ward&nbsp;off any Hamas-like attacks that took place on Israeli soil on Oct 7. Two weeks of devastation has left above 8,000 people dead in both Israel and Gaza Strip.&nbsp;</p>

<p>India has also battled similar surprise attacks by terror&nbsp;groups based in the neighbouring countries. Drawing lessons from the Israel-Hamas war, India doesn’t want to be caught off-guard if a similar situation arises at its own border.</p>

<p>According to a report by Bloomberg, India’s defence officials met six vendors of surveillance and reconnaissance drones over the last week. An order is expected to be placed very soon.</p>

<p>India needs a robust border defence system to ward&nbsp;off terror threats and foil the dangerous designs of its enemies. For instance, in 2008, terrorists from Pakistan armed with assault weapons and grenades infiltrated Mumbai by sea and managed to kill 166 people.</p>

<p>India is now acting with urgency on this matter. According to media reports, Indian forces are looking to have the drone defence system up and running by as early as May.</p>

<p>It must be noted that this system would be used not just to tackle security challenges but also the drug menace. Pakistan-based groups are believed to be using drones to smuggle drugs across the border.</p>

<p>According to reports, it might take India almost 18 months to cover the entire stretch of borders. The system will cost India $500 million annually.</p>

<h2><strong>How does this system work?</strong></h2>

<p>Solar-powered drones known as High-Altitude Pseudo Satellites (HAPS) will be deployed to support the drone infrastructure, capable of extended flight durations without requiring frequent landings.&nbsp;</p>

<p>These 24/7 high-altitude, long-endurance drones will also serve as backup for the conventional radar network along the country's borders, transmitting images directly to local command centres.&nbsp;</p>

<p>India's Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Anurag Thakur, said that the country will require at least 100,000 drone pilots by 2024. Speaking after flagging off the 'Drone Yatra 2.0' in Chennai, the minister added that drone technology is essential for various fields including defence, agriculture, health (drone delivery of medicines) and entertainment.</p>

<p>The minister was in the city for inaugurating the Drone Skilling and Training Virtual E-Learning Platform at the Chennai manufacturing facility&nbsp;of India's homegrown&nbsp;drone manufacturer Garuda Aerospace. He also flagged off 'Operation 777', that is meant to educate and demonstrate the efficacy of drones for different agricultural uses across 777 districts in India.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to the company, the nationwide Drone Yatra is their attempt to familiarise farmers about the usage and features of Garuda's Kisan Drones, which are meant to serve agricultural purposes. It also aims to train youth in gaining experience as drone pilots.</p>

<p>"With a dual objective of empowering farmers and creating employment for Indian youth, we are committed to manufacturing at least one lakh Kisan Drones in India, by 2024," said Agnishwar Jayaprakash, Founder and&nbsp;CEO, Garuda Aerospace.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The company says that their Kisan Drones are fitted with sensors, cameras, sprayers and help in increasing food crop productivity, reduce crop loss, reduce farmer exposure to harmful chemicals.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"If you take the conservative average of ₹50,000 a month for 100,000 youth, for an entire year, it would amount to ₹6000 crore worth employment in the drone sector."</p>

<p>The minister added that there are over 200 drone start-ups in the country and that the number is set to grow, thereby generating new job opportunities for youth.&nbsp;</p>
