A 55-year-old man died from his injuries Monday, two days after he was allegedly attacked by gau rakshaks (cow protectionists) for transporting cows in Alwar, Rajasthan, the Indian Express reported.&nbsp;

Pehlu Khan and four other men were assaulted even after they showed their attackers papers stating that they had bought the cows -- which they said were milch cattle -- police told the Indian Express.&nbsp;

&ldquo;Gau rakshaks affiliated with the Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal stopped four vehicles, near Jaguwas crossing on National Highway 8, on Saturday evening, alleging that they were illegally transporting bovines. These vehicles were coming from Jaipur, and were headed towards Nuh district in Haryana,&rdquo; Ramesh Chand Sinsinwar, SHO, Behror police station told The Indian Express.&nbsp;

Sinsinwar told the Indian Express that five of the victims had to be hospitalised.

The Indian Express also spoke to 22-year-old Azmat, who was with Khan in the pick-up truck.

&quot;I had bought two milch cows for Rs 75,000, and I had all the valid documents with me. We were not even trying to hide the cows, as we were taking them in a pick-up truck. At around 6 pm on Saturday, the gau rakshaks stopped our vehicle and asked us our names. They allowed our driver, Arjun, to leave,&quot; Azmat told the Indian Express.&nbsp;

&ldquo;I told them I had all the documents but they pulled us out of the vehicle and beat us up. They took away Rs 35,000 from me. I later lost consciousness and woke up in a hospital at around 1 am on Sunday,&rdquo; he added.

Police told the Indian Express that the gau rakshaks were booked for culpable homicide, destruction of property, and other charges.

After Khan&#39;s death, they have also been booked for murder.&nbsp;

The men attacked were booked too, under the Rajasthan Bovine Animals (Prohibition of Slaughter &amp; Regulation of Temporary Migration or Export) Act, 1995.

In a brutal incident of cow vigilantism, a BJP worker was killed and another person injured allegedly by VHP and Bajrang Dal activists who waylaid and attacked them in India&#39;s southern state of Karnataka last night.&nbsp; 
 
There have been a number of incidents of people being beaten or even killed in the recent past -- since the BJP came to power in India -- because they were accused of being cattle traders. Cow slaughter is banned in a number of states in India. But what was different this time was that the man killed was a worker of the ruling BJP -- the party that does the most to protect the animal.&nbsp; 
 
Praveen Poojary (28) and Akshay Devadiga (20) were surrounded and attacked with sharp weapons by the VHP and Bajrang Dal activists as they were transporting three cows in a vehicle, Udupi district Superintendent of Police KT Balakrishna told PTI. 
 
Poojary died instantly while Devadiga has been admitted to a hospital at Bramhavar, he said. 
 
Seventeen people were arrested and a hunt was on to nab the others involved, he said. 
 
The coastal districts of Udupi and Dakshina Kannada have been reporting cases of cow vigilantism in the last several years. 
 
The incident comes days after the Indian Home Ministry had cracked the whip on cow vigilantism, asking all states not to tolerate anyone taking law into their hands in the name of protecting cow and to take prompt action against such offenders. 
 
The Home Ministry advisory had come two days after Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi attacked cow vigilantes and asked people to beware of these &#39;fake&#39; protectors trying to divide the society and the country. 
 
He made these comments after his government and BJP came under attack over incidents of violence against Dalits and Muslims by cow vigilantes in various states including Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, and Madhya Pradesh. 
 
Meanwhile, Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara said prima facie cattle trade-related business dispute may be the reason behind the killing of the BJP worker. 
 
&quot;Seventeen people have been arrested in connection with the incident, they (police) are suspecting some sort of a cattle trade-related business dispute,&quot; he told reporters in Bengaluru, adding police have taken up the case. 
 
Noting that he does not see a communal angle to the incident &quot;at this point of time&quot;, Parameshwara said &quot;some reason must be there, we will find out&quot;. 
 
He said, &quot;We don&#39;t know at this stage, but they are suspecting some sort of a dispute because of the trade, it is not definite, but they are suspecting. Investigation will give us the final picture.&quot;&nbsp; 
 
Parameshwara also expressed concern over repeated incidents relating to beef and cattle trade in Karnataka. 
 
&quot;We are vigilant, we will definitely try and maintain peace and order. I appeal to the people who are trying to create this kind of disturbance not to do this because we are a tolerant society and we should not create these kinds of issues,&quot; he said.
